Hello all. I've just acquired a 1996ish Bally S5500. I can get it to work fine, until it has to pay out. The hopper attempts to pay out unsuccessfully, then displays a 32 code. I've reset the machine and it has plenty of coins in the hopper. When I run the hopper test #4, the hopper only spins backwards slowly then sends a 32 again. The hopper will spin forward when i push the manual button on top of the hopper control board, but only for a second at a time. I've cleaned the optics. I have hunted through this website for a similar complaint, but haven't found anything yet.
I'm a true novice at electronics, but I'm willing to try anything once!
The label on the side says AS-04970-1004 but I'm unsure if that's model/part number, or in inventory number from the casino. It also says "coin 1.00" but it has been used with quarters.

the motor has a Plus and minus indication, on a dc motor, if those are reversed it will spin backwards. swap the top leads and see id that doesn't fix the problem.

If reversing the leads to get it to go proper direction which Jim mentioned, does not resolve your issue, then the motor commutator on the motor armature is clogged with carbon between the segments and needs cleaned. The motor can be disassembled and repaired. Hopper available on Ebay

Thanks for the comments, gents. Miraculously, I've been able to get it working properly by taking the whole thing apart and giving it a more thorough cleaning.
Now if I could just get the reels and payouts to match the top glass... but that's for another thread.
