IGT PE+ to LCD
« on: October 27, 2022, 09:18:14 PM »
I’m considering doing the crt to lcd conversion on my PE+. I have read the information posted here, and came across this on eBay.
Anyone familiar with it? Would this work to convert the 15k CGA to VGA?
Any thoughts appreciated!

The PE+ does not use a standard CGA 15k signal, the colors would be way off.  The signal requires some active processing to get the colors to invert correctly.  Here's the thread on the old website that cracked the issue.  A good read if you are technically inclined, you could probably make the converter yourself.

It works, and it works well! Yes, colors had to be inverted, I was aware of that, but it’s a pretty simple and cheap fix. Just replace a 20 pin ic. I am very happy with the picture, although I don’t have a poker game to test.
It’s a simple hookup, I used the wires that were connected to the ceronix. I just spliced them to a cheap VGA cable, and connected the monitor.

I’m sorry this took me so long to try, I had back surgery and had some complications. I’m just starting to be active again.

I’ll try to post a few pictures too.

This converter comes with a power supply and one VGA to Component cable. $109 on eBay.

Congratulations on getting that to work. Would you be kind enough to more thoroughly explain about the 20-pin IC that has to be changed out, and what IC you used?

Can you also show which wires you connected to the VGA cable?

In your IMG_195, the color palette doesn't look like it would be correct, although your particular slot game appears to have the right colors.

Knagle, sure! I can get pictures for you. I also can post the diagram that came off of the eBay listing. That’s actually what I used to connect the wires to the VGA cable.
You may be absolutely right about colors, I just don’t have a way to test that. I also am unsure of that old computer monitor! I really don’t know why we quit using it, but am glad I saved it! Anyway, maybe I will try a known working monitor too, just in case it’s that old monitor. I can post a picture of that too.
I will try to get pictures tomorrow.

The information on replacing the chip to invert colors was also found here, in fact, I could have sworn that you were the one who posted it! I have a screenshot of it.  Also, it’s not U45 on my board, it was U52.
Thanks!

I understand about the IC replacement now. I thought you were saying you replaced a component in the adapter, not the previously documented one on the MPU board from the sticky thread.

For the record, yes the posts there are under my name, but most of the content was from other members who had posted to the old NLG site. I created a master thread about the conversion process here on the "new" site as it was feared we were going to lose access to the old posts on the previous site.

If you are able to post a picture of your wiring going to the VGA cable, I think that would be useful. At this point it's been years since I've messed around with any of this stuff, and any documentation is helpful.

I used a cheap 15 pin VGA cable, cut it in half and separated the wires. I used a multimeter to verify which wires went to which pins.
I used the PE+ wires right off the old Ceronix and placed them like this.
Blue -to- pin 3
Green -to- pin 2
Red -to- pin 1
Gnd -to- pin 6
Vs.  -to- pin 14
Hs  -to- pin 13

Connect this to the converter and got the inverted colors. Replaced the 74HC574 with the 74HC564. And the colors look correct.

Knagle, here’s a few pictures of what worked for me. I didn’t try another monitor yet. I was thinking about the colors more, do you have a PE+ with poker or other multi games? If so, do you want to try this? If it would help you, or others on this site, I would be willing to ship this converter to you to try. You could just send it back when you’re done. I can send you a 74HC564 too ( I bought extras) and the hack job of a vga cable that I made too! Just let me know.

I really did not like the PE+ solution from the old site but changing out the one chip with the adapter is exciting. I see a lcd in my not too distant future.

Albeit trying to find a 14 or 15” square lcd in this day and age might be a challenge:
I think the smallest I have these days is a 24” 16:9

First, thank you for documenting what you did -- the pictures and descriptions will be helpful for many folks I'm sure.

I appreciate your offer, but my PE+ machines aren't easily accessible to me at the moment. I think it would probably be easier for me to just send you a poker game and have you try it on your setup to see how it looks. I'll be in touch via PM or e-mail shortly.

I agree Jay! I don’t know why I saved this monitor, or why I quit using it! It is working well with my old game though. I am going to try a few more things to verify that all colors are working, maybe you should stay tuned for the results, before spending money.

I asked my help desk guy and he just dropped 3 15” dells off at my desk - noting he couldn’t test as his pc only has display port and these only have a vga and not even dvi

Next question how did you mount yours ?
Did you leave it in its plastic shell or strip it down ?

I didn’t mount it yet. So far, it’s just sitting on the shelf. I was thinking of somehow mounting it to the old tray, like the old tube was, but haven’t tried. If you come up with something, please share!

I looked at the Ceronix web site this morning, and its $572usd. Same as SuzoHapp.
They seem to mount it to the same chassis as the old one.
I will drag one of my new "finds" home with me tonight and fiddle with it a bit.

Jay, if I had a better game, I maybe would’ve considered the Ceronix replacement. I just didn’t want to spend much on this old game!
But that said, do you have a poker game (or something else with more color and graphics)? If so, would you want to try this converter? I could ship it to you, and you could ship it back after you test the colors. Knagle and I are both curious about the colors. My Red White and Blue looks fine, but that doesn’t mean everything will. I would like to know for sure, especially if it would help others here.
