Title: Trouble Making Diagnostic USB with VHD Image
Post by: marcbollinger on October 27, 2020, 06:35:18 PM
Hey guys,

I have a VHD image of the diagnostic usb that I made awhile back, but everytime I burn it to a USB (I use HDD Raw Copy), upon boot-up in the SMLD, it always shows "USB Mass Storage Authentication failed!! Rebooting in 10 seconds".

I've tried several different USB sticks, some USB 3.0 and some USB 2.0 and some large and smaller sized ones.

Any ideas?

What is the OS of the machine you are trying to image it on?

Hahaha, sorry man! Windows 10.

I think I did this once on macOS using dd, but don't have access to a mac anymore.

Windows creates a hidden directory called "System Volume Information"  This directory needs to be removed in order for the drive to pass validation. Google on how to do that.

No worries. Windows 10 puts some hidden files on the drive that cause the checksum to not match.  One easy way to avoid that is to do it on a Windows 7 machine (or maybe Mac?).  Do you have access to one?

That makes sense.. I figured it was something like that. I could do Windows 7 in a VM, but not sure if W10 will interfere with it.

On that thought, I can do a live cd for ubuntu in order to use dd.. I'll have to brush up on the commands, I think I'll have to convert it from VHD to ISO first.

You don't have to reflash, just remove the directory.  It is easy to do it on a live linux distro.  Just use rmdir -rf "System Volume Information"

Hey, thanks Rick. Just booted to Ubuntu live.. completely wiped the drive, (using fdisk), created a fresh partition, converted the VHD to RAW, used dd to burn to usb.

Took USB out, put in SAVP/SMLD, and still shows USB Mass Storage Authentication Failed!! (with or without ekey 07 in).

I'm going to try with other USB sticks tomorrow to see what the deal is.. I've had this problem for awhile.

Your image may already include the "System Volume Information" directory.  If the image was created on a windows 10 pc, there is no way the image was created without it.  You need erase that directory from the image.
