Title: Game king battery replacement
Post by: chemstar on September 03, 2014, 05:36:46 AM
Hi guys iv purchased a game king with a rom error

after i reset with the audit switch and test switch it reboots and goes to same error

from what iv read i need to replace the on board nicad battery with a lithium of course.

my question today is do i need to replace the two battery chips as well? iv never seen them before so im a little confused :Scratch-Head:

and yes this is my first igt (have plenty of aristocrats)

A rom error is a bad eprom. Check all eproms that their legs are not bent or not making contacts.  Also I've not read where you replace NiMH batteries with lithium, the charging circuits don't work the same.

Thanks for that, do I replace the chip batteries in the first picture as well ? Cheers

Check them with a meter, if they are anything less than 3v replace them, but like rickhunter pointed out, check to make sure allyour chips are seated well and all legs went into the sockets with none bent over

It is unlikely those chips are bad.  First go through the eproms, a ROM error is exactly that.   You may have bad chips as well.   Then after you pass the rom error, you will probably get others, some you can easily clear others not so much.  Keep us posted on your progress.

Also, on your picture, I don't see the 2nd battery.  These boards have 2 battery, the blue 3.6v NiMH battery and then a button cell battery that backs up the memory circuit while the machine is off.  In your picture it is covered by an IGT sticker, but there appear to just be wires there?

Bt1 is a resistor seems to have been there since manufacture

What pins do I test for voltage on the battery chips?

Oh and it's an australian game king if that helps

Thanks guys

Those are your RAM chips with an internal backup battery.  You can't test the battery voltage because the battery is internal to the chip.  If it were bad you would get a RAM error message every time you power cycle the machine as the machine wouldn't retain its settings.  US boards have a non-rechargeable lithium coin cell battery that goes where your resistor is in the photo that provide backup power for the RAM chips.  If you are getting a ROM error message then you should be looking at the ROM chips like Rick said.

After reading more I am starting to think it's the ram chips

There must be some way to test to see if they have voltage ???

Edit= sorry guys my bad it is a RAM error not ROM error

clear the RAM error.  You should turn the jackpot reset key with door open, then you will get another screen, turn key again, then it will tell you to hold down reset button in mpu tray for 2 to 3 seconds.  You will probably do this twice, then you will get an eeprom error, turn key again, then you will probably get the ram error twice.  After you clear all those, the game should play.

Well these Battery backed RAM chips are not easy to come by, I have to order from over seas.

Any idea how to convert back to the original design ??

What chips do I use in place of the battery backed type

And is it fine just to put a button cell where it's meant to be

Cheers for the help guys I'm still a Kane king green horn, I'm sure I'll pick it up quick

Try what rickhunter said in his last post before you go ordering new chips and let us know how you come out

Hi rick yeah I just tried it like you said but it keeps looping back to RAM error

I don't know if it helps diagnosing but this is the screen I get when I try to clear

CMOS invalid state, you might need to replace those battery backed RAMS then.  Do you get to the point where it asks to hold reset button for 2 to 3 seconds?  Sometimes you have to do it twice, then the eeprom error, then ram error twice again.

Couldn't find it in the states, only from China.

Yeah I get to the hold test button for 2-3 seconds then she reboots and I get the same error,

I have reset 6-7 times still the same so yeah I'm thinking those bat backed rams

Is it possible to put in standard rams and install the button cell?

Thanks heaps for all the help guys

If the reset doesn't work after trying it three or four times do a full clear and key set up using a Key 040

Anyone have a copy of the key 040 chip,

i have 3 weeks until the batt back ram turns up

so i might give a ram clear a go

Is that with all the original chips back on?

Yep

Check to make sure you don't have any bend legs or anything on the chips.   That is usually something not inserted properly

Post by: chemstar on September 06, 2014, 08:31:37 PM
All the legs are fine, I think iv wiped something

the file i burnt to the chip was labled "igt video ram clear"

have i corrupted the video ram or something?

anyone seen anything like this?

The last time I saw something like that, it was a bad SIMM on the board.  You cannot physically destroy anything by using a chip, unless you put it backwards, then you zap the chip.  Also look at the pins that connect the MPU board to the backplane, and look for pins that got bent.

Post by: chemstar on September 08, 2014, 05:57:50 PM
Cheers rick, there were no pins bent,

So I decided to pull the main board out

disconnect the new onboard battery then reconnect and fire up again

Which worked iv never been so happy to get a ram error

I'm back to square one with the ram error

I'm still waiting on thos battery backed rams so hopefully that will fix the problem.

Does anyone have a copy of the key chip?

Are we able to request here because they are not game Roms?

Sorry admin if it's not allowed

Never even thought of torrent for slot software, but I guess anything is possible.

The gameboard looks Australian to me (diode in place of a Button Cell). Is this an Australian/ NZ machine ?

Australian machines do not use key chips
The setup is driven by on screen menus at new chip setup.
cheers

Hi I'm waiting on a key chip now, I installed new chips and all I got was a pixelated screen, and yes australian machine

From memory may be U47 U48 cause that effect. Are the chips in correct socket U48 nearest the sound card
have you received PM yet?

Yeah chips are all correct but they are new, when I put the old ones back in I still get the ram error,

So how do I do a ram clear on a australian machine?

If you have had the M48Z512AY chips out have you bent a pin on them?
If you have a burner, read the chips, using the correct chip type 27C4002 for U8
27C801 for U4, U5, U20, U21 and sound chip U6
27C4001 for U47, U48   ( check chip could be 27C2001 on the odd game )
The chechsum will match the chips if the chips are ok.( Last four digits of burner checksum)
will need to email reset info.

Well the bat backed ram m48z512 from the above supplier seem to be dodgy

I get a pixelated screen even with the key chip in

I threw the old chips in and gave it a ram clear and I get up to 'please power down and access logic board'

Any ideas where to go now ?

Glad you got it going.  This will be a good reference thread for AU/NZ machines.  Thanks for sharing your results.
