Title: Thank you TILT for the EEPROM mod to 3902 boards!!!
Post by: firehawk618 on January 28, 2022, 08:23:26 PM
Just wanted to say thank you TILT for figuring this out!  I have done it now to 5 of my boards and it works awesome!  The original how to thread doesn't allow replies therefore this new post.  Plus this will bring it back to current times incase anyone else missed it and wants to do it.

As stated in the how to, this is not for amateurs but isn't very difficult if you're equipped with proper tooling / equipment.

YAY!!!

My pleasure.  Thank you for the feedback.

I've heard from some folks here and there, but not from too many who have done the board mod.  I think most people go the extra EEPROM route and swap the board along with the EEPROM.  No worries about damaging your MPU that way, but it sure is nice just swapping the MPU and not messing with the EEPROMs.

I wish there was an easy mod to do it with an 044 MPU board.  There's an empty 8 pin socket, but it's connected to a different I2C bus than the one on the motherboard. So you have to swap the MPU and EEPROM on that platform.

Glad it's working well for you...enjoy!

For me swapping EEPROMs would be such a pain due to the placement of it.  With how affordable complete MPUs are I figured I was going to go this route.

It's working awesome.

Now I need to do some reading on the different key chips and backing up of my SIMM modules in case they fail in the future.

True.

I shake my head when I see 3902 MPUs going for $60 - $75.  Most of mine when I got them were double that :hissyfit:

Aww man, 3902 MPUs dropping in value for some reason?  I guess that's good for me.

I looked at the 044 stuff briefly and it's quite spendy vs 3902 for sure.

Nothing beats my AVP that I have seen for value per game so far.

I would like to pick up 1 more machine and would like one that's easy / inexpensive to swap games in.  I get bored quick and love to tinker!

I wanted to mention also that if anyone wants their 3902 board modded I would be happy to do it for you for a small charge to cover my time. I have a pile of chips and good battery holders ready to go in.  I've done 10 boards so far and would be happy to post pictures of my work if anyone is concerned about hack work.   As Tilt stated in the original how to post that was made if you have several 3902 boards you swap in and out this mod makes it so easy to do just that.

If this is against forum rules I apologize and please delete it or let me know and I'll remove it.
