Title: Bally 5500 I think my coin optic board is broke? AS-3356-303 Unsure?
Post by: Oddzball on December 05, 2022, 08:56:20 PM
So Im new to this, but, this slot machine did work fine a while ago, the the PSU died foir some reason. I finally got around to replacing the PSU, and did a clear, and everything works, except the coin optic sensor board?

Again, it all worked fine before the psu died, so I think the coin optics board is dead? Part number is AS-3356-303

With the machine on, The amber light will flash once, but is not staying on. Pushing the white switch on the optics board does not give me a credit. I did clean the sensor/leds and prism. But the Amber light is suppose to be on all the time right?

The light is not on. I have changed nothing dip switch wise since the machine was working. If I have the door switch pushed/pulled closed, the green light for the coin comparitor is on. The coins when inserted with the door closed go straight into the hopper as expected, but I get no credit. If I push the pseudo coin button on the MPU I get a credit and can play a spin as expected.

Im not sure what to do, as I have not been able to locate a new board on ebay.

You can check the Coin Mech switch on the MPU, is it the UP position?

FWIW I think Im failing this test.

Coin Acceptor Test
The coin acceptor is active, indicated by the steady
amber LED on the COD board or the green LED on Coin
Mechanisms CC-16 acceptor.
An accepted coin will cause 09, Coin Credit, to
appear in the first two digits of the CREDIT display. A count
of accepted coins display in the right two digits of CREDIT.
A malfunction or improper coin travel will display
as 0A, Coin Error, in CREDIT. (See Input Ports Table).

I dont see a 09 or 0A output when dropping a coin in.
I dont get ANY feedback tbh. The green LED for the coin comparitor is on, but the yellow LED is off. Bad board? Dont know. I tried reseating the chip. I pulled the board, cleaned the IR LEDS, the prism, the block etc etc. I spent likterally 6 hours reading every post about the coin optic mechanism i could find on this board. mind you I have zero experience with SLot machine repair, just an electronics hobby background.

And it all DID work at one time, then the PSU died, i left it dead for like 5 years, then got a new PSU, put it in, everything seems great, but no dice on the coin mechanism.
Since Im not getting ANY error codes does that imply the coin comparitor itself is bad too? Shouldnt it see a coin pass, then when the optics dont pick it up, shouldnt I get an error about that?

Yup it was the coin optics board, putting a new one in fixed the issue.
