Title: Vision Top Box PC not powering up
Post by: SuperSlots on May 30, 2023, 05:25:32 PM
I've got an IGT Vision that's giving me a Main Battery Low error, I know how to fix that, but I noticed the top box LCD PC isn't powering up. The fan doesn't spin up and nothing happens. Does the S2000 boot the top box power-wise, and I need to get the main battery fixed, or is this an issue with the top box PC itself?

I was a slot tech for three years back in the early 2000's, but never came across this (those machines were much newer back then).

I've had this machine for some years, it worked fine last I powered it on, but that was YEARS ago. Comparably, same time has passed with my S+, but it powered up just fine :)

Any common fixes/component replacements for no power on the top box PC?

Another thought is if this is a known issue and a "kiss it goodbye" situation, I'm not particularly enamored with the game kit or the whole Vision concept... Can I convert this to an S2000 and just remove the top LCD and put an S2000 game kit in it?

Thanks for any help!

Chris

Yes...you can put in a different S2000 game...it doesn't have to be a Vision set-up.

You remember those 4-pin power connectors we used to use on old destop computers that had the harnesses running to the CD drive, hard drive and motherboard?
That's what these top box LCD units can use to power it up.
If you take off the back cover, you'll see the 4-pin power connector towards the right of middle of the circuit board.
Any old desktop computer power supply unit will have that connector. and be able to light up the LCD....providing it's not dead itself.

Thanks! I'll check that out, I think I've got one I can use to test it, and I did see that in there. Something is happening as the CPU chip and support/video chips get warm/hot.

Where could I find a replacement game kit for this thing? It's a slant top... I'm not sure where game kits can be purchased. Doesn't much matter what it is... Nudge games are cool though!

Take the back off of the Vision monitor. There are 3 or 4 caps on one end kind of under the metal case right against the side of the housing, pretty big. See if they look burnt.   Also check the RAM, It has 1 or 2 sticks of RAM. Take them out and reseat them, they come loose sometimes or go bad. The monitor should have 3 sets of wires going to it (maybe 4) I can't completely remember. follow the Netplex (big bundle)  and the 4 pin to the Netplex/Power distribution board on the back. Unplug those from the board on the backwall and put them in another port. They are all the same of course. Maybe they have come loose also. That netplex/power distribution board may be bad also.?. There is a harness that goes from the sound amp, depending on the machine, Vision Ready or S2000 Vision, Vision ready will not have a sound amp, s2000 vision will, that supplies power to the netplex/ power distribution board. Is there anything else plugged into it so you know for sure it is working?

Visually all of the tantalum capacitors look fine, nothing burnt or exploded. The fan doesn't run, but again, the CPU and video ICs get warm. Reseated RAM, no change. Unplugged netplex and reconnected and hear a click in the speakers, so it's getting some degree of power. Seems like the 5V rail is working but perhaps not the 12V, as there is no monitor display and the fan on the side isn't running.

I'd really like to just convert this thing to an S2000 and put a nudge game or other effect game in it (haywire perhaps?), but I have no idea where I'd get the game kit, let alone for an S2000 Slant Top. I'd imagine all I need is the game EPROMs and the top glass. I have key/clear chips.

Yeah all you need is the top glass and payline depending if you want a 1 line, 3 line or 5 line.. or use what you already have in there and eeporms. really not much of a difference if you already have a sound amp. you will have to bypass the LCD monitor because the sound goes through that for a vision except for the base speaker in the tray if you have one there I dont think you do on a slant top. There is a comm cable that plugs into the power distribution board in the bottom on the back wall. It is 2 gray wires that connects to the LCD screen you can just unplug that. Other than that not much more. Ill take the monitor if you don't want it. And you need reel strips of course. What game was in the vision?

Im sure you can find some slant top glass from members on here.

I don't think it will, top glass looks too tall/narrow.

Who is RB? They have software?

Of course, sorry. It's "Cash Advance", SB000283. My machine is a slant top, and the top glass was destroyed before I got the machine so I don't have that.
