Has anyone REALLY done a good crt-lcd conversion on a PE+
« on: February 05, 2022, 03:29:42 PM »
And how much did that cost?  I can pick up a 1998 PE+ for peanuts, but my skill level leaves something to be desired with technical video conversations.  The current monitor "lights up" meaning grey screen.  Replacing a Creronix 1493 looks like out of my budget range (wife is in charge of fun money).  Any $$ ballparks on a conversation or reasonable diagnostics on a grey screen would be appreciated.

Sure.  I put one in mine a couple of years back.  I bought a conversion kit from Ceronix.  Back then it was less than $400, not sure what it is now.  Here's a couple of pics.

The monitors on a PE+ are in a housing that just plugs in - similar to how the hopper plugs into your S+
Creronix makes a replacement LCD, slide your old tube out, slide the new tube in. No problem. Not Cheap.

Converting a small LCD TV or computer monitor to work in the PE+ is a bit of a challenge.
First off the image is CGA not VGA - most monitors will up convert or you can buy a kit that your feed in your CGA signal and VGA comes out - you can find these on video game forums.
The real challenge is that IGT inverts the colors so everything will look wonky - there are a few here that have done hacks to make them work - they all involve running a few wires on the MPU and are not pretty.
I have about 4 MPU boards pre-loaded with games and I am not going to modify each of them etc. I want something more stock. So far its an enigma that has not been solved.

You might want to reach out to some of the banner ads on the home page of the forum and see if they have a spare Creronix  CRT they can sell you cheap.
Tilt, Channel Maniac etc might be able to repair your current monitor with a cap kit or new high voltage transistors.

From the point of view of a slant top. These are Heavy so if this is destined for your basement - you may lose a few friends in the move process.
The coin elevators can also be troublesome

If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

Thanks for the insight, much appreciated, maybe out of my skill level.  I will check with the vendors and maybe I can find something that will work and still not get my wife PXXXXD off!
