IGT S2000 Barcrest Greed is Good "Bonus Display Error"
« on: October 17, 2022, 09:00:18 AM »
I have a Greed is Good that was working pre-shipment, but now results in a "Bonus Display Error".

Here is a video clip of what happens: https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/02ckxMkb_E3gVBwpF4PZS6Z5g#IMG_0063

What I've done:

- Unplugged and replugged in all connections to the back of the top box and to the back of the top box board mounted on the back of the machine.
- Checked fuses on the top box boards.
- Gone through I/O tests and ensured that the bonus wheel and all LEDs are lighting up correctly and the wheel spins correctly
- Reseated the board several times (1270 RBK)
- Closed/Opened door several times to make sure it's not an old error

What I haven't done:
- Clear/Key: Waiting on RBK chip to do so

I understand this is a rare game, but anybody have any diagnostic ideas that I might not have tried yet?

Best,
Marc

Are there any batteries in the top box that need changing?  I would also closely examine any ribbon cables in the top box.

No batteries that I could see, no ribbon cables. Just a bunch of molex for power and netplex. I think there may be an issue with the LED light board, as at one point I was able to put it through the I/O test and get it to light up, but now it doesn't. Included a few pictures, but not sure that will help diagnose the issue.

I would focus again on all molex connectors and look for any signs of overheating. Start by pulling the power supply and check that connector burnt or damaged pins.

Good call, I'll work through it and see. Nothing obvious on my first go through.

Ended up swapping for a known good power supply and still the problem exists. Just once, I was able to get the wheel assembly AND bonus box to light up for about 20 seconds, then the light box went out. It seems I can either get the light box to light OR the wheel to light, but never both (reliably).

This is really puzzling  :Scratch-Head:

It's gotta be power related - the cables drawing power all look good.

In the bottom of the cabinet , does the service light come on? If not,  There is a 12V power supply in the power distribution box that may connected to the bonus display.

Yeah, service light comes on. It looks like the top box is powered directly from the main PSU though - at least following the cables from the PSU molex to the top box passthrough. I'll check distribution box though just in case.

One thing I wanted to mention. If I go into the I/O Tests and initiate the top box light board, all of it lights up. Also, if I go to the I/O Game Tests and test the wheel, it lights up and spins normally.

I'm starting to suspect a board issue - I have an RBK clear chip coming and have spare 1270 boards to test.

Well, I believe I found the most likely cause. I was doing a reset with the RBK01 chip and it always booted back up to SHA-1 type mismatch on the flash board. I removed the RG flash board and noticed a bent pin (pic below). This likely explains the intermittent bonus box functionality and such.

I'm too nervous to attempt to unbend this pin - thinking I'll end up doing more damage to the surrounding pins (I don't have surgeon hands). Reached out to guy that has done board repairs for me in the past in the hopes he can look at it.

Does anybody know of anybody that can flash RG boards? I do have access to the files in case I'm going to need a new RG board.

Got the board fixed, was able to do a clear/key with RB01 and game boots. Problem still remains. Bonus Display Error.

I’m at a loss at this point. The LED board and wheel all work (through I/O and game tests), so I doubt it’s a power issue.

I could try another 1270 board to rule that out. Any other ideas?

Cool, before I try that, are those chips unique to this game theme? I do have another board in a Ringmaster that I could swap out to rule out, but assumed those chips might be programmed specifically for this machine.

"Bonus Display Error" could also be a bad wire or loose connector on the COMM board.
What the small COMM board does is communicate data between the topbox computer and the MPU down below.
Once you locate it, post a photo or video of it with the power ON.

It is a small rectangular circuit board on the back wall, roughly 2" x 4"in size with flashing red or green LED lights.
It will be located at about just below the height of the reel shelf.
There should be two black Molex connectors going into it.....one goes upstairs to the topbox computer, while the other heads downwards to the PD board box near the floor of the cabinet that has the external household power cord plugged into it.

The wires (I believe there are 3 ?) will be mostly gray in that COMM harness.
Anyways, check and make sure the connections are tight and secure.
In fact, wiggle them off and reconnect them.
Never disconnect or connect anything with the power ON....power down first, if ON.
The components in your machine, esp.in the topbox, are very rare and difficult to replace.
Your machine is going on 20+ years old and the Barcrest parts for your machine aren't made anywhere, anymore.

Thanks man, yeah, I have gone through that board. I have two amber lights when powered on. Will post a pic next time I’m near it.

I’ve basically been through all molex in the top box. So, maybe it’s a wire issue. I’ll try some continuity checks as well.

Believe me, I know how rare this stuff is LOL. That’s why I’m nervous to touch it and make it worse.

It seems obvious to me that something happened during shipping.
I'm just thinking something came loose during all the movement.
Re-seat stuff, check plugs, etc...take your time...This is a hobby...be careful, patient and meticulous.
It's going to be something so simple or over-looked, you'll be smacking your head when you find it....haha

The saga continues with this darn machine. I'm being tortured by the Barcrest Gods on this one. I have narrowed the problem down to the Multi Motor Controller board. I did notice some bent/iffy pins on the SST square chip, which I had repaired. It's testing ok.

However, now, the machine reports "Aux. Reels Disconnected" and the wheel no longer turns, either on boot or during tests. I don't know if swapping that chip out means something needs to be flashed on the board or what. RBK cleared a few times, still no luck.

Does anybody know more about this board? If I were to find another multi motor controller (yeah right  :Tongue_Out:), can I just swap out the 3 socketed chips?

I'm hoping that SOMEDAY I'll be able to get this Greed is Good running, but so far, it's been one problem after another. Seller showed it working before shipping, but was DOA. Not sure what exactly happened, but I'm 100% confident it's something on this board.

Best,
Marc
