MK6 XP MB ram... What's it for?
« on: June 01, 2023, 06:40:23 AM »
Hi Guys, Yep I know what ram does but what's it's purpose on my MK6 XP mother board?
Is it for the system? Is it for the game? or it it for options like tito?

I'm going to set up another MB for another game and want to make sure I do it right...

Plus who knows where I can get some?

Thanks guys
Chuck

From the manual:

Communication Configuration Board
Serial channels 2 and 3 are configured through the Communications Configuration
Board (CCB) which is plugged into the 72-pin SIMM socket on the Main Board. The
CCB converts the opto-coupled UART I/O to any of the following signal levels:
• RS232
• Current loop (Open collector)
• Bank Note Acceptor interface
• Serial printer
• TTL compatible level

The form factor is the only thing it has in common, it's best to not plug vintage PC memory into that slot! IIRC the MK6 was designed to reuse MK5 I/O boards, which explains why it still has a 72-pin SIMM form factor on a board from 2002 (the MK5 platform dates way back to 1994 when 486 DX4/100 and 75 MHz Pentium CPUs were cutting edge technology).

FWIW, the machine's RAM is actually the Samsung chips scattered down the center of the board.

Interesting!
So What do I plug into this slot?
I have TITO and there's TITO ram listed on eBay for the MK6... Do I go that route?

Thanks
