Bucks Ahoy top box problem
« on: December 18, 2022, 11:18:52 AM »
I’m having an issue with a Bios 1.  I believe the issue is with the top box. The VFD is stuck at display passes self test. I previously had a msverify comm error. Top screen starts up to boot goes blank and sits like that.
So far I tried the following:
Remove and replaced memory sticks several times in the top box
Removed several wire connections and ribbon wires and insured they are seated properly
Reseated all I/O boards
Back of top box as led lights on and beeps when I turn it on

Was working last weekend when I powered it up yesterday it came up with errors Any assistance would be appreciated

I just tried connecting the keyboard to the top box and loaded optimized settings. Now it’s continually looping to the RFA boot screen and lower VFD says display passes self test

I changed the top box battery. I continuously loop to boot screen and VFD stuck at display passes self test. Is it possible that the problem is with my MPU?

Ok let's try to sort a few things out.
Lets start with the top box, on the top box unplug the plug that has 3 or four gray wires. Start the machine and see if it will get past where you are now. It should boot all the way to the last screen that will say initializing...
Also when you turn it on for the above test please tell me what the VFD on the bottom says along the way.
Leave on for at least 10 minutes regarding the top box test.
The bottom should eventually give an ms comm error.

Bios 1 machines do not like to be turned off in mid boot so keep your power on and offs to a minimum.

When I first turned on the power I had nothing on the top screen. Turned it off and back on and the top monitor started boot system. VFD had waiting for video display. Top box did 3 boot cycles and VFD went to Msverify comm error. It still at that and nothing in the top box

Sorry went to a show with the wife.
Bottom box is OK top box may be starting to suffer.
If the harddrive went bad it would give you an error.
Was it working before you changed the battery or did you try changing the battery because you were having problems?

That makes sense. Bios1 can function with a dead battery up top. Now for the bad news, the top box probably needs a new motherboard or at least the one you have recapped (and there are a lot of them).
I know you have other Reel Touch.  If you have another bios1 top box you might want try this drive in this machine with a different top box to be sure.
These are getting really old and parts are hard to come by. I know Jim at midwest slots had a few working top boxes but expensive to ship to you.

Thanks for the assistance. I have 2 other reel touch machines but both are bios 2. Can I use the motherboard from a bios 2 in this machine?

No the harddrive is set up for bios 1
You will destroy the harddrive if you try that.
You can however take your bios 2 box first remove the bios 2 harddrive, then swap out the bios chip from the bios 1 top box, install the bios 1 bucks harddrive,  install in Bucks, resave the optimized settings with the keyboard and give it a shot.

Do not pry on thechip socket it will crack.
Take a paper clip and bend the very end at a 90, then use it to hook under the chip and pull it up carefully.

Sorry for taking so long. I swapped it over to the other machine. Everything works perfectly. So that rules out MPU and Hard Drive issues. What is causing the issue?
