Title: Bally 922 progressive question
Post by: kjnuke on September 12, 2022, 08:16:17 AM
Hello,
I picked up a Bally 922 about a month ago and have been slowly bringing it back to life. After going through the machine it seems to be playing and paying correctly.
My question is on how the progressive part of the machine works. As it's working now, the score reel will advance alternately between the bottom and top sets of reels on the 2nd and 4th coin. I assume this is correct, but can't find any documentation on how it's supposed to work. I found a PDF link on the cdyn site for a 922 manual, but I can't get it to open, not sure why.
On a side note, the upper feature glass was broken by the previous owner before I could pick it up. He ended up selling it to me for $50, so I don't have much in it. Hoping someone might have a source for a glass or any suggestions. I know there is glass out there where the progressive reels are covered up also. I'd be willing to put a glass in it like that as a last resort, but ideally would rather have the correct glass in it.

When the super jackpot is made.
The machine will shut down and the stars around the perimeter of the 777s payout schedule will light.
If it’s wired for a jackpot top light, it will come on and possibly the bell will continue to ring.
A casino attendant would arrive with a supervisor and a person to reset the machine.
The attendant will count out your winnings.
Good luck!

Thanks DavidLee for the reply!
Yep, it works as you described.
It'll pay out 200 coins on the 1 through 4 paylines, perimeter lights will flash and payline that wins 7s will flash also. 5th payline, no hopper just lights will flash as described as that is the super payout attendant only. Bell rings on 5th coin jackpot also.
Just curious on how/when it advances the progressive reels on certain coins in. Not really a big deal, seems to be working fine. Just wondered the logic of how and when the progressive advances.

the schematic says the progressive reels are selected and stepped by the jackpot total step-up unit.

the jackpot total unit wipers step every time a coin is played via a line relay switch.  Which steps (wiper positions) actually pass a pulse thru to a progressive reel likely depends on the specific model of 922 you have, and probably the coin denomination.

e.g. the 5/10 cent version of the 922-K schematic implies a progressive count increase every 4 coins, but the schem isn't necessarily complete/accurate when showing stepper rivet connections.  E.g. the 922-K schem says the rivet the wiper is sitting on is unwired, but it probably is.  If the game was literally wired like the schem shows, there would be a period of 7 coins where no progressive stepping happened.

note the pulse that steps the progressive reel is created when a switch on the step-up arm of the jackpot using closes, which happens when the plunger pulls into the coil.  The wipers move when the step-up coil power is removed and the springs pull the plunger out of the coil.

you could stick an ohmeter on the blue/orange wire (27-5) on the step-up arm switch and see at what steps you get zero ohms to the contact plate green wire (40-5 - increases the top jackpot), or the green/yellow wire (43-5 - increases the bottom jackpot.

I guess the answer you already know :-)

Thanks Wolftalk for digging into the schematic and for the explanation of how the progressive reels advance. Interesting that they were set up differently and advanced depending on denomination. Appreciate all of the help!
