New old member. Was a member of the old site back around 2010 (same name now as then), only messed with slots at that time (Bally EM, IGT S, IGT S+, IGT S2000). Just acquired a Game King upright ear'd cabinet. 17" Ceronix monitor upgrade done about 3 years back. It's got the i960 processor with 3 simm slots, so assuming it's the 3902 board. Does not have the "audio" board, game chips are the 2214. No TITO printer, has coin comparator (but capped off), no hopper (but could put one in). I do have some of the common key chips on order for clearing/programming/game changes. I think I read that key chip 20 is a good chip, with 17 a close second.
Obviously, the video quality on the video slots is not the best. With that, what is the biggest upgrade that can be done with this machine? That is, can I swap the tray to a different tray? Is the resolution quality limited with what I've got? (Almost picked up an AVP, but this was a decent deal).
I've done some reading, have a couple manuals, but can't say that I've seen the "down and dirty" short answer to the "upgrade" question. Thanks!

You can upgrade to 044 platform. It will require new 044 MPU, new backplane, and a flashboard flashed with a poker game set or I-game . It won't be cheap.
BTW, keychip for 3902 is either 17, 22, or 40 depending on set installed. (a really old set could be even different, like key05).

Miss-spoke about the chips I've got on order - my set does include the 17, 22 and 40 chips (said 20 but meant 22).
I think I've seen some "3902 to 044" upgrade kits(?) on places like Fleabay.
What are the biggest advantages/things I'd notice if I upgraded to 044?

Bigger, better game sets/ I-games. Graphics are better too. Superstar Poker is most popular, it has 100 games total. (poker/keno/slots/BJ)

Thanks. From what I'm further reading, it sounds like my best option might be to just look for a separate 044 machine, as the conversion from 3902 to 044 would probably set me back a few hundred.
While I had a ton of contacts/sources years back, it looks like I'm going to need to make new ones. Ugh. Used to have a chip programmer and stuff, no idea where that equipment is anymore.
Last question - anything I should know about that would increase the playability of my existing machine? Here's a pic of my current board

A superstar 044 machine with a nice LCD/printer/Tito is going for around $1500 these days. Upgrading a 3902 machine to 044 (three boards) is about $500.
