1986 Double Diamond motherboard, error 61
« on: July 07, 2022, 02:29:24 PM »
First timer here so please be tolerant of my ignorance with use of discussion boards. I have a 1986 Double Diamond slot machine (model 5031A, serial 308561). Research on the serial number leads me to believe that this is a S-Plus (6 digit serial number). I am getting the dead battery replaced (it has been dead about 10 years). There is currently a 61 error code being displayed. I have read about possibly needing to change some of the ROM chips, but no diagram that I can find matches my motherboard. My chips go in a different direction than all the other pictures, so I don’t know which is which. Any help on what chip(s) I may need to replace if the new battery doesn’t fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like an S board.

Open door and press self test button for 2 to 3 seconds. You should see 61_1

Close door then turn jackpot reset key one time and wait for reels to spin.

Your pic is of the MPU, the motherboard (backplane) is what it plugs into.

Thank you. I will try that when the battery gets replaced. I have a manual for the S-Plus and it says error 61 calls for a new CMOS chip. Hopefully your solution will work with the new battery.

Yeah, that's a S-slot MPU.  The 61 error is just a CMOS data error.  Following the instructions Mark gave you should clear it.  Usually the CMOS data is corrupt, not the CMOS chip itself.

Typically s model machines don’t need the second procedure, holding the white button should load the program and put the game in play,

That machine does not have a backplane, the board is connected via three cables , this is the major distinguishing factor between a s model and a s plus model.

Turning the jackpot key could put you in the book keeping mode, if so, don’t panic, just continue turning the key until you get back to the game play mode.
Hope this helps

Thanks for this in one thread. I was reading this and wondering if I just got lucky with my S. It was a storage unit buy and thankfully it didn’t work, so I got it for $100.  I didn’t know anything about 3-reels at the time but I knew to replace the battery. There was no key, only that white button looking at me so I pressed it and the machine sprang to life. It has been a great machine ever since. I know no more about an S now than I did then.
Oh, I do know this, if someone sticks a penny in the hopper it can throw the machine into an error that will be very difficult to investigate and find!

You fly to Juneau, you don't drive. And the states capital is in Juneau of all places. They have tried to move it to the road system before but it always get shot down. Some say they keep it that way to prevent the public from being able to attend meetings and voice opinions.
