How to Access Coins/Hopper? (1976 Bally 809)
« on: October 22, 2022, 02:08:09 PM »
Just got this, not sure how to get the nickles back out. The hopper does not seem to want to slide out like an IGT. I don't see any release lever. Do I pull out the reels first? If so, do I need to unplug the machine first?

Does this not have an On/Off switch?

Thanks guys!

The hopper will just pull out.  My first bally  I was afraid to break something also.  Just a firm tug on the handle of the hopper.  No on or off switch just unplug when not in use.  To remove the reels, flip the tab on each side down, pull out.  When reinstaling the reel mech, slide it in slowly and wiggle a little as to not bend the beau plug pins.

Very nice clean machine you have.

Hoppers get stuck in the tracks/guides when sitting a long time.
Do to excessive lubricant in most cases.
Slight movement to one side with a small screwdriver could break it loose.
Adding some spray cleaning lube a few hours before with the machine propped up slightly in the front helps.
Also check both sides for any wedged obstacles or wires caught on case hardware.

It seems loose in the track, wiggles back and forth. I have not tried the spray. It seems caught on something I can't see. Video below...

At this point I guess I just need to get $40 more in nickels and keep playing. I have another Bally Low Boy that had no key. Me and the previous owner have been playing it for years with no problems, still locked shut to this day. It spits out enough money regularly to never fill up all the way.

Video of the stuck hopper here: https://youtu.be/wS4Lsyl7DrE

Double checking for obstructions/wedged in stuff...going to lube it tomarrow morning.

Nice looking machine, very clean.
Doesn’t appear lubricant will make a difference at this point.
Looks more like there is some sort of obstruction holding the unit.
It’s possible that the beau plug is fused or stuck together, but a slim chance.
Best to get a bright light and closely inspect both sides top and bottom.
Possibly a cover is out of place. A coin or screw is lodged in the guide track.
The door hinge might be obstructing the unit.
The sliding bar underneath the hopper has retaining screws,
one might’ve worked loose and moved upward.

Flip the levers on the right and left side of the reel assembly down, then pull out the mechanism. That will give you a better look at the hopper.

Whats that lever to the left of the handle?

That is not actually a lever, but a guide of some kind. I tried wiggling that first.

It's for sure one of the things DavidLee mentioned. I am going to go down the list as soon as I get some extra time. I will update the thread as soon as I achive success!

Also, Thank you! I will pull the reel mechanism out to help me see better.

Thanks guys! Will report back.
