What kind of CPU board is this? Not seen before
« on: November 03, 2022, 01:22:54 PM »
I have never seen this CPU board before. It looks similar to the S+, but has only one eprom socket. Says copyright 1986, so that places it before S+. Any suggestions?

I thought the S board looked different. But there might be several generations of them? Maybe they did a redesign?

The S slot MPU I've seen (and I have one) don't look like that.  They have two connectors on the top and one on the side and wires from the machine plug into them.  It doesn't have a motherboard like the S+ either.  I think it may be a very late S MPU designed for the S+ cabinets.  You could put a RS chip in the socket, plug it into a S+ machine and see if it works.

I didn't notice the backplane connectors.  You are probably right Cliff.  I have never owned an S machine.

I also believe it's an S Slot board, one that uses the RS chip (on a 27c256 eprom) which is a combo chip instead of separate reel and game chips.  I wouldn't be surprised if someone on here has one.

Thanks,
Wayne

Now that I think about this a little more I think it's a very early S+ MPU that uses a single reel/game PROM (RSXXXX).  It wouldn't make sense to redesign a S board for a very limited lifetime to put in a S+ cabinet.  They probably initially started early production with these and then changed to the S+ board that we're used to with separate Reel and Game PROMs.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge of the S/S+ history will chime in and let us know.  Or maybe it was only used in early export (overseas) machines?

The story behind it is that I bought some S+ boards from a US seller, and the seller thought they where standard boards. He shipped three of them amongst the 10 boards I bought. So no cabinets. Have you seen them before Stayouttadabunker?

I tried as suggested to fit the CPU board with a 256 eprom with a RSXXXX reel/game prom. I mounted it to a S+ tray, and it went straight into the motherboard slot. But when power on, the motherboard caught on fire with heavy smoke. It's clearly not compatible with a standard S+ motherboard.

:burningresistor: is never a good thing and I didn't expect that to happen!  I guess it will remain a mystery until someone can come along and identify it.

That is a IGT "M" slot board. Jim at Midwest should be able to confirm.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

Not a M slot MPU.  Here's a picture of the one in my M slot.

So it is clearly not a M slot board. Neither S slot and absolutly not compatible with S+. I don't know what is left.

It's a "Blazing 7s" board. Sorry, couldn't resist.

I had one on the shelf for the longest time but it was blown up too.
I'm guessing now that someone before me tried to put one in an S+ cabinet or something and it fried like yours did?
The ONLY thing I can think of is that it could very well be one of the ARMY MPU's.
We found SS & SP software that had absolutely ZERO documentation for the military base machines.
