Bally EM issues - new to slots
« on: March 09, 2025, 03:06:45 PM »
Howdy from Austin, TX! Just bought a 1969 Bally Nickel machine. It's a 3 bar one and have had too troubleshoot it a few times so far so I will probably be on here a lot. The guy I got it from sent me this link.

One thing I would like to know is how to set the payout. It is not paying out what it is supposed to and it is random. Also, how do you empty the hopper?

Thanks,

Ayesijuan

That's a NICE looking Bally EM.
Please post a shot of it with the door open.
To empty the hopper, (POWER OFF) just pull it straight out. There might be a small "catch lever" in the front that you just move to the side.

Do you have the keys ..... usually when you open a slot door the hopper is sitting right there......

Usually mystery payouts are the result of the strips being on wrong or the wrong strips..... once again more details will be needed.

it's some kind of triple bar version of an 809, so the 809-B paperwork would be appropriate.

you can find paperwork in https://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/

if there's no model/serial number plate on the side below the handle, then see what codes are stamped into the slotted metal reel index discs.

payout issues kinda depends on what you mean by random.  Is it paying when a non-paying combination is on the payline, or is it just paying the wrong amounts for valid winning spins?

win detecting is done by the wipers on the reel arms.  If the wiper contacts are not on the correct rivets, you'll have problems.

the basic idea is the slots in the metal index discs position the wiper contacts on a specific colum of rivets on the contact plates.  The w-1041-xxx document has details, but on the 809-B the following should be true:

1] the deepest index disc slots on all three reels correspond to triple bar symbols

2] the slot depth on reels 1-2 for a triple bar is 7, so the wipers should be on the third column of rivets from the front edge of the contact plate (post pic if not sure)

3] the slot depth for the triple bar on reel 3 is 6, so when reel 3 is indexed in the deepest slot, the wipers should be on the 4th column of rivets

note the paper tapes can be repositioned by loosening the crimps and spinning the tapes in the tins.  If someone took the index discs off the reel tins, it's possible they remounted them incorrectly so the tapes are mispositioned.  The index disc and wiper position is what matters ... the reel strips are decoration that just needs to be positioned properly.  See https://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/bally_info/reel_strip_positioning/

The hopper slides out of the machine exposing the coins.
When replacing the hopper, make sure the flanges are below the guide rails.
It happens occasionally one side will accidentally be placed on top of the guide.
As the hopper nears the back of the machine, gently push it as to align the sockets.

If the hopper seems to be stuck during the removal process.
It’s most likely a build up of solidified lubricant and dirt.
Prop up the front of the machine 1 inch or so, add penetrating oil to the guides.
Then manipulate the hopper back and forth with a screwdriver.

Regarding the odd payouts.
The reel tapes appear to be lined up, as when they slide they usually don’t line up exactly.
Unless someone installed them wrong.

With the door open the reels can be stop by hand. By stopping the clock fan and setting up a payout then release the clock fan. Start out with one coin, set up the small pay first and then the rest in order.
Observe and make note each payout amount. This could give a sense to what might be wrong.
