Reoccurring Error Code 61
« on: August 07, 2022, 10:08:35 PM »
I am unable to clear error code 61 on my IGT Blackjack slot machine.  This is a 2 coin machine manufactured in 10/1996.
The 61 error code has been coming up since the battery was replaced.  I’ve tried steps found in another thread in this forum to clear the error without success:
1)   Pressed the test button for a couple seconds – this advanced the error code to 61-1
2)   Closed the door and turned the reset key once – this caused the Coins Played to briefly flash zero and the Insert Coin light flashed
3)   After a few seconds it goes back to error 61
It looks like we’re stuck in a 61 loop. From what I’ve been reading it looks like the next step would be to use a clear chip to reset the machine.  Any other suggestions on what to try next?

Did you try to clear with a clear chip?
You could pull out the CMOS chip for 10 seconds and replace.
If you cannot get it to work use the clear chip.
If that does not work you may need a new backplane board.

I've found that also sometimes the [61] error goes away changing out the small 8-pin 24c04 chip on the motherboard.
Hopefully yours is in a small socket...otherwise you'd have to to cut it, unsolder the pins from the holes, solder in a new socket and throw in a new 24c04  chip.
This the is best time to use a Clear chip instead of all this work....lol

Top photo is a socketed 24c04 chip....bottom photo is a plain soldered in chip on the motherboard.

I have not tried the clear chip as of yet.  From what I've read, that should be a last resort.  So I was checking if there's anything else to try before going that route.
Where is the best place to purchase a clear chip - and how do I determine which one is needed for my machine?  In addition it sounds like I would also need a set chip since the machine has a DBV.

The Clear chip should fix you up, you will also need a SET chip to reactivate your Bill Validator after using the Clear chip.
On our home page - bottom Right - you will find Ricks FAQs on how to use a Clear and Set Chip.

Basically what has happened is that the contents of the CMOS chip is corrupt which occurred from loss of power. There are two CMOS chips.
- there is one on the (removeable) MPU board and another on the fixed motherboard that the MPU plugs into.
The clear chip reformats the contents and starts off from factory settings.

In absence of a clear chip you can try removing the CMOS chip on the MPU board waiting 10+ seconds and plugging it back in and giving it another go.
If the one on the MPU board isn't corrupt it should reformat the other and allow you to continue working.

We have a number of vendors on our home page - I suggest calling them and they can send you a set of chips.
If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

Thanks for all the information.  I'll work on obtaining the clear and set chips and post an update after I give those a try!

We're making some progress!  Got the correct clear chip and set chip - big thanks to Ron (RB) for suppling those!  Used the (IVC123) clear chip to get past the reoccurring 61 error and got the machine operating again.  Then used the SET015 chip to activate the DBV and set the denomination - that seems to be working correctly.

But now that the machine is operational, we've noticed 2 issues:

1) Occasional incorrect payouts.  Payouts are correct about 80% of the time.  But in some cases, it pays out when it shouldn't and in other cases it doesn't pay out when it should.  I haven't been able to determine if it's a specific reel that is causing the problem.  Machine seems to pay correctly when you get all blanks on the reels (it returns your bet in this case).  But a common error is when you get a 'Black Jack' symbol.  Any Black Jack symbol should pay 2 coins (per coin bet).  But frequently it doesn't pay when this symbol comes up.  Does anyone have any suggestions to correct this?

2) This is a 2-coin Blackjack machine - but it is accepting up to 3 coins per play.  You can put in 1, 2 or 3 coins each play.  If you put in a 4th coin, it will drop though to the coin tray.  The glass is only showing payouts for 1 or 2 coins and all the documentation shows it should only be a 2-coin machine.  But if you hit the play max coins button, it will play 3 coins.  If you play 3 coins and get all blanks on the reel, it will return 3 coins.  Is there a setting that can correct this?

Possibly the reel strips are:
in the wrong order
They are not on the reels correctly.
or you have the wrong reel strips

What are the reel strip numbers from left to right ?

That is a 3 coin SS chip in your machine.  You need a 2 coin SS chip and also either have reel strips in wrong order or one has slid out of position.

Typically you can check the correct position of the reel strips by going into the test menu and going to a #4 in the coins played window, press the spin reels button, reels should spin to the jackpot symbols,  you will see if anything is wrong,  each time you press the spin button it will cycle to the next combo, and display the low and high payout in the winner paid window and credits window.

not sure if this works with a 1271 chip, I know it does using a Sp731.

hope this helps

Jim

SP1270 will not do that, only thing I don't like about it.  But it will line up to the strip seams if you turn the jackpot key 4 times while in #4. That at least will tell if one strip has slipped out of position.

Further update - I have confirmed using the test menu that the machine has a SP1271 game chip and an SS3668 reel chip.  And I see in the documentation on this site that the SS3668 is a 3 coin chip (as sixcardmark indicated).

Checking the reel strips, the serial numbers from left to right were:  192913-3, 192913-2 and 192913-1.  From what I've read on this site the numbers should be in sequence from left to right.  So I switched the positions of reels 1 and 3.  This has seemed to fix the problem with the incorrect payouts.  I played the machine for some time and the payouts were all correct (although like a regular casino machine you didn't hit a payout very often)!

I was not able to check the position of the reel strips using the test menu.  Once I got to #4 on the menu, the spin button was not lite and would not spin the reels to the jackpot positions.  I will try the other suggestion to turn the jackpot key 4 times while in #4 and check the position of the seams.

Thanks again for all your help with these issues.  The machine is working as expected - I'm ready to mark this thread as 'solved'!!!
