Title: Is it possible to fabricate topper insert from belly glass ?
Post by: dailey on August 29, 2018, 09:59:15 AM

I have an idea and wondered if anyone has tried it.

I've been thinking about putting a polygon topper on one of my S2000 machines but I can't find the plexi insert I want. Would it be possible to take the belly glass of the game "Five Times Pay" and cut it to a polygon shape to fit the topper ? There seems to be plenty of glass available. I don't have a topper or insert to measure so I'm unsure of the dimensions.

The other alternative would be a proper oval topper for this game but I have never been able to find a Five Times Pay insert.

You can cut it with a wet saw but how you retain it in the topper may be an issue

Is the glass used on slot machines ordinary plate glass (not tempered glass)?

Plate, that's why I said it can be cut with a wet saw

ok, thanks!

A local glass shop should be able to cut the belly glass in the way that the OP wants.

I would just have a printing shop make sign out of the logo and attach it to a piece of plexi cut to the right size, or even have the sign shop make one.  It's easy enough to scan and make a high res version of the glass.  Like idesign says, how you end up holding it in the topper could be an issue.

I took my existing insert into a sign shop so they could use it as a template.
I have a logo that I used for my Poker Chips and you can see it as my avatar.
I believe they cut the plexy first, then printed on mylar and adhered it to the plexy.
I am using Aristocrat toppers on my S+ machines and they have about 28 holes around the outside for the LED bulbs.
I had 3 done (all the same) the price worked out to be about $150. In reality the artwork setup was $88, and about $20 for the sheet of plexi that they used and the rest was printing at about $14/ea
If I was to do about 30 of these my cost would be manageable as you could get about 4 perhaps 5 cutouts from each sheet of plexi.

I would not be cutting Belly Glass - as someone pointed out it is likely tempered and then trying to drill out the 28 holes or equivalent would be a nightmare without cracking it.

I had considered mounting a old laptop screen to the back of a clear plexy and then masking it to an oval shape. The intent was that I could then put up any logo I wanted. The plan was to use teamviewer so I had remote access to the laptop and just seal the whole thing in the topper. Where I ran into a bit of a challenge is that the bios on my old laptop would not auto-power on (when power was applied) and required me to push a button. This became awkward and I didn't want to start pulling the laptop apart to mount an external button.

You could easily do that now with a media player that connects to wifi to control it's content and just use cheap vga lcd monitor.  Fitting it inside a topper could be interesting though.

It would be easy to do with a LCD picture frame and CF or USB stick as well.
I was trying to do it with the parts I had vs spending any $$.

The biggest challenge is getting the screen to come back to the image you want it to after a hard power off.

I have a HDMI backup camera display. 7" large would work perfect but after power off it comes back to standby and you need to hit a button. I have some old Ipad2's but they don't go on/off with the power, and after the battery runs dead and come back - they go their home screen vs a particular app.

My idea was to encase whatever electronics in the topper and not have to fool with them at all unless I wanted to change images.
