Title: Bally 1982 25 cent slot machine - door/key problem
Post by: dwtjan on March 16, 2024, 06:56:41 PM
[bI just purchased a Bally 1982 slot machine. It came with two barrel keys and one flat one I believe is a reset key. We used the barrel key to open the front. But we cannot get the door to shut and lock or get the key out unless it is open. The locking mechanism works great when it is open. But trying to close it and turn the key to lock it, will not relatch totally, thereby ending up with not being able to lock the door. Perhaps it is not lining up just right but do not know how to make it work. Also, the flat key fits but does not seem to do anything. Could this be due to the door being open? I've read that it is a reset key but I have no clue how to reset it! I did not want to just plug the machine in before I researched what to do first. If I could get the door to close and remove the key, I would just plug it in to see what happens. Any suggestions re the door lock / key problem? Thanks everyone][/b]

First check to see if the door closes completely, that nothing is preventing it from shutting 100%.
A lot of those slot machine door hinges are out of wack. the door sags creating a issue.
I have developed a resolution when refurbishing my slot machines, I make the latch part on the cabinet adjustable so it will lock smoothly.

Just an idea.  :nerd:

I agree with David. I have multiple Bally EMs that close and latch like butter. Some are so so but one of them no matter what I’ve tried I have to pick up on the door and push it closed while turning the lock.

Thank you. I'll try this the best I can. I can't lift things like I used to. Perhaps I'll get my roommate's help and one can lift and push in and the other can work the key!

I just tried lifting the door, pushing it in a bit and it worked beautifully!! The key came right out. Thank you SO VERY much!!!

Inspect the screws that go through the hinges into the door.
Sometimes they will work loose.

Also, the 3 notch locking bar can be adjusted.
The adjustment takes a lot of time and doesn’t seem worth it unless the door doesn’t lock at all.
Check the alignment of the three vertical hooks on the bar as to be sure they align.

Thank you for the advice. I'll take all I can get! At this point I am so new and have no experience with slots, I am afraid to do anything without checking first. I will check the screws and alignment.

The listing said this slot machine needs to be 'reset". It came with the barrel keys and the flat key which is called the reset key. I have not discovered how exactly I am supposed to do this. I have not even plugged it in yet as I wanted to research if there was an order in which to do things. I've ordered some books and read as much as I could find online. Apparently, it matters as to how it was powered down and that it will pick up to where it was in its cycle when being powered off. I got the impression it matters how you or when you power it on in the steps that need to be done. I am hesitant as I do not want to screw things up by doing something out of order. Do you know if there is a right or wrong way of plugging it in and what I should be doing or looking for when it comes on?

Thanks again!

Hi and welcome.

If you haven't plugged it in yet, the link below should take you to a post in the old forum that goes through checking out a new purchase.

I just clicked on the link to get to the Bally manual and it said I did not have permission to open this file. Log in first. This is very frustrating as it said my username did not exist. My account has been activated and I've been using it messaging here. I know for a fact what my username and password were activated with. It specifically said my username does not exist, not my password, so I could not reset it. I do not know what I am supposed to do to get my username recognized. I REALLY need this manual! Please advise. Thanks again...

My apologies, I think you may need to be a contributing member to access the old forum.

What is a "contributing member" and how to become one?

Go to the "home page", just click on its button at top of page.   Scroll down the left side of the page.   There will be a window "Help support NLG".    I believe contributing members can access the old forum.   There is a ton of info within those pages.

1982 is kinda past the production of bally EM machines, tho I suppose they may still have made them by request.

there should be a model/serial number plate on the machine under the handle.  What's it say?

if no plate, please post pictures of front of machine and inside the machine.  If you're having trouble posting due to size limitations, email pics to slotpics@cdyn.com and I'll downsize/post them for ya.

you probably don't need the manual that is on NLG for your machine.  Most of the manuals are just exploded parts diagrams.  If your machine is post-EM (an E-series or later machine), then the manuals are more useful and you can find those in https://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/bally_manuals/
