Title: splus mother board blows the R3 resistor/help needed please
Post by: slotdoofus on March 28, 2023, 08:51:41 AM
I'm working on an Splus machine. The machine has a couple issues. I'm not sure if they are related.
First off, I noticed the Q4 transistor was burnt on the CPU board. Along with this...the R3 resistor on the motherboard is also burnt to a crisp. Can someone provide some assistance?

You neglected to tell us if that's a 10 or 16 Mhz board...I will assume that's a 10Mhz board.

On the motherboard, swap the R4 resistor (oops...R3....sorry! )with a new orange, white gold, gold resistor and you should be back in business.
I attached a resistor colorchart below for you!

The Q4 triac is a L201E3...not available at mouser.com...but here's a link to a sheet on it.
You have to look around for 'em...>>>

But what about the burnt R3 resistor?

Typo...meant to say the R3 resistor on the MB.

I found the L201E3 transistor, (original 201 is discontinued...replaced w/ a 401).

Is this a common problem with Splus machines? I'm guessing that something is causing the R3 to blow? I blew 2 of them up now.

I'm having some difficulty figuring out which resistor to order from Mouser.....orange, white, gold gold means I need a 39 ohm?

No! That is NOT a common problem.
I work with about 100 S+'s and have NEVER had to replace ANY resistors on the MB....
Once, a MB burned up, but that was because someone dropped something metal onto the board, and shorted out two traces.

When you pulled out the MB, was there anything UNDER the board shorting out the bottom?
You'll see a LOT of exposed solderin under there.
A coin getting underneath will cause havoc for sure.
Are any pins in the long headers bent and touching?
That R3 runs directly to Pin-7 of the J10 header.
The 1st pin is always the square pin in the headers...look underneath.
On top, it's mostly the downward white arrows.
J1, J2, and J3 have upward pointing arrows.
J4, J6, and J11 have sideways white arrows pointing to the 1st pin.
Are there any pins bent anywhere inside of the header housings?

It's rare but I've heard of the U1 X2404 memory chip shorting out and burning up a board.
I unsoldered one once and installed an 8-pin socket for that chip.

R3 is a 3.9ohm (not 39) 5% 1/2W .  It's a series resistor for the denomination lamp.  Check the bulb, some can create a short across socket and burn it up.  Seems to happen more when people "updgrade" to a LED bulb.  Somewhere on the board here is a post and a picture that shows the problem with certain lamps and holders.  I've changed a few R3's on the motherboard that have burnt up.

I found the post on the old board.  Read this thread, it describes the problem that can happen.

Thanks a bunch Tilt....

My machine is "upgraded" to LED. What incandescent bulb should I get? All of the bulbs I have are for the S2000's.

It's a GE 86 bulb.  The LED/lamp holder combo is probably why you keep smoking R3.   :burningresistor:

There are 2 sizes...all of the incandescent bulbs are now LEDs

There's only one size GE86 bulb.  Q4 controls the "Coin Accepted" lamp, more than likely the LED is why it smoked too.  Q5 controls the "Insert Coin" lamp if that isn't working either.

Just wanted to give this topic its' last reply....

It was LEDs that was causing my issues. I installed 86 bulbs...the machine is running great.

Thanks for the help everybody.... :thank_you:
