Title: Uh Oh S+ Died Overnight
Post by: brazoot on April 05, 2023, 02:03:11 PM
My S+ is usually left on.... 9 Line Triple Diamond. Went to play it , Nothing. No error codes, all windows are blank (Coin in, credits, etc.)  All button lights are off. The only thing that "resets" is the Bill Validator, but it is not in the ready mode. The reels do not "Home" like they should on "Powering up" I Reseated the MPU, checked fuses, It lights up, (belly glass, Top glass, reel light) But everything else is dead.  Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Did you check the typical power connector at the MB?

All wires secure in connectors. I checked very carefully.  Thanks RB. Tom
Still nothing.

He's mainly referring to any sign of heat/burning on that white Molex connector in particular.

I know, I saw his photo that he was kind enough to take. I looked at all the molex connectors and saw no sign of heat discoloration. I wonder if it is a power supply problem. Thanks for helping, Tom

This is the connector everyone is referring to. Reseat it a couple of times and see if the machine works after that.  Also check the power supply fuses with a multimeter.

UPDATE...Fixed !   I swapped the 16 meg board with a 10 meg board that I had. Swapped the Game and Reel Eproms as well. Put it in and the machine Booted up, reels moved ,etc. But the Credit and Coin In , other window lights flickered. But, machine then played, although no sound. Well, it appears to be a board problem. So,... I put the Eproms back into the 16 (original) board and wiggled and reseated the Molex connector coming off the Power Supply mounted on the Main Board ( That transformer looking thing in the corner )  Put the board back in the machine, turned it on, and bingo, Everything is back to normal. So, although it was not a burnt connection, it was a "bad" connection from the power supply that feeds the main board.  Hope this helps someone.  And, a big Thank You to you guys for helping me.  Tom .... in Pa.

Glad it is running again  :applause:.  FYI 10 and 16MHz boards use different game proms.  That's why you had no sound and other odd symptoms with it.  I didn't even thing it would boot enough to play, but obviously it did.  Anyways enjoy!

I'm marking this as solved, but you will likely need to replace the power cable that runs between the power supply and the motherboard or you'll run into this issue again. Reseating the connector is a temporary fix, but the poor design of the original connector will lead to additional future failures.

You can find details on the power connector here, at the link Tilt posted earlier: https://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=28443.0

In addition to the purchase options there, I have seen replacement wire harnesses on eBay from time to time, too.
