I have two brand new - fresh untouched splash decks - and one old type that isn't splash
perfectly wrapped in bubble wrap stored safely for a couple of years
apparently if oled decks are not used they go bad - all three of mine now have dead buttons
maybe we have to store them in the freezer
I'm enraged and I'm ready to throw the decks in the dumpster
-
What is it about the button panels that is time-sensitive or degraded by storage? Why wouldn't the same thing happen to the same kind of button panels that have been on older machines for several years?

Absolutely they will have buttons go bad just sitting, brand new or slightly used as well
Please tell me Dumpster location when you toss
Now for the scientific reason they go bad is that no pesticides were sprayed on them and bugs got to them (Organic Light Emitting Diode) Get it.?

lol yes the huge nest of spiders chomping down on the organic buttons should have gave me a clue :24:
it effects both type of decks splash and regular
At least I was able to move them around so I'll use it like this for a while

These decks are 5 years and 3 months old
This one gets turned on every few months in this machine

I'm not sure how accurate the following excerpt from wikipedia is but it fits with your experience about limited lifespan of these type materials. For the slot machine manufacturer and the casino this is probably not seen as a big problem since the machine's use in a casino is generally a fairly short number of years, they are not designed with years of private use for the home owner in mind.

That only highlights degradation due to use, not lack of use
-
Here's the wording from another paragraph in the technical journal that wikipedia excerpt was taken from, it mentions the reduced life of OLED's in storage as well as in operating usage:

good find -
so the bottom line is don't keep a spare - it will die on you
also - i wonder how much longer we will be able to get screens for the thing - sooner or later the'll all burn out
-
Yeah, I love OLED, but keep one of the older panels around with a HHSR button on it. ;)

Oddly enough, freezing might actually extend the life during storage based on what they say

What year were your button panels made (how old are they)? Also, what is the mfr date on the slot machine itself, it might be written on the machine's idplate?
-
I'm telling you it works - I still have three palm pilots in the freezer

I got the two splash decks new just over 5 years ago
the older one i picked up 3 years ago as a spare -
two have been stored under the slot machines in storage for 3 years not powered on - the other splash was installed in the tranny pictured above
it appears that as long as they get powered once and a while they remain ok - but still if you look at the tranny one of the buttons is not as bright as the others -
both bluebirds were made in 2006 i think

Jim, They just tossed some in Katy Texas in a dumpster-Brand new with same Problem. Send one of your Cronies to go get them-I'll give you coordinates.

Just wondering, I mean I know it would be a less “wonderful experience†but if the buttons went out could you still use them until you got a spare. And man what the hell slot manufactures? I mean that means pretty much every machine from IGT and WMS will eventually be out of perfect working order. I swear I’m gonna store 10 of these in a deep freeze. BREAK OUT THE LIQUID NITROGEN.

The OLED cell doesn't seem to effect the buttons action just it's visual appearance. The heart of each button is a microcontroller processor for each button, all linked to a master micro controller and communication setup for the USB. Those can be corrupted, by various problems, and that will lead to a dead button panel. (individual button microcontrollers can be replaced preferably with a known good one off an otherwise dead panel.)

Had these on my BB2 cabinet they are beautiful but had firmware problems with them. Switch them out to standard buttons have had 0 issues.
-
True but NXT 3.x requires an OLED button panel. Fortunately they all use and stick with the good 3.09 firmware.
-
hence why I deem the 3.x a horrible platform. I can only name on one hand game titles I would want if I owned a BB3. And my hand lost 2 fingers 9 years ago.

Wow you must be that guy from Kentucky reptile zoo that mills the snakes and lost two fingers on one hand to pit vipers. I’ve always wondered why you didn’t wear gloves! JK seriously Willy wonka, omg kittens and puppies, alluding and magic quest, and powerball 3 reel are the ones I want and there almost all impossible to get. Idk if it’ll get better or worse with age.
