Title: BB2 HD Replacement
Post by: Dirtguy on March 30, 2022, 08:34:21 AM
Hi'
Just wondering, if I would replace the HD in my BB2 CPU with a SSD drive, does it have to be formatted before I install it ? Also will a SSD drive make the machine boot faster?

Does not need to be formatted and it makes a marginal difference in boot time since it still boots of the CF OS card, then it loads the game image off the hard drive.  I've never actually timed it, but it didn't seem to make that big of a perceived difference.

It will need to be ram cleared for a system halt after swapping in a non identical drive. After the ram clear the OS will format and partition the drive as a matter of course during the first run, same as any ram clear.
They are fairly tolerant of hard drive type, most I have tried have worked. I think the only real requirement is 1gb min size.

I wouldn't go below 40GB. Just my opinion but some the "heavier" games do load a lot of assets to the drives (Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, etc. SSD you will notice an improvement on Lord of the Rings as the loading screens during are a bit faster. I just like having SSDs in my slots that support it.

Also if you want quicker boot up times an SSD with OS family H13,  OS 13.51 or above load the games faster but some games still require 13.37.

Like Rick said, you still relying on CF card speeds.
