Title: BB2E - What's better to add? An actual TSE board or a Fooler card?
Post by: sccarlso on January 18, 2024, 12:32:20 PM
Trying to get a handle on the TSE concept between games, as from what I've read, it's generally in BB1 machines.

But as you can play BB1 games on BB2.  That changes things up a bit!

I have games that need a fooler.  And also a fooler card CF to "make" a true TSE box act as a fooler.   Of course you need it if the game used a custom light topper, and if it had that, something other than the top screen, it of course wouldn't display anything on the top screen of a BB2.

But it isn't clear if all games that need a TSE board will display video on the top monitor of a BB2 if you have an actual TSE board with the proper CF in.  I read it says on BB2 you don't connect a real TSE board's VGA to the top monitor, you leave the video connected to the BB2 brainbox.  BB1's needed the video from the TSE to drive the top monitor (if the game used one and you had a dual screen BB1).

Are there games which would actually utilize the top screen on a BB2 with a true TSE board and the correct CF in it for the game?
Or will it always show a blank or WMS screen regardless if you have a true TSE board with proper CF, or a fooler card.  If my BB2E will never have top video in any game with a TSE board.  Even one that has the proper CF in the TSE.   Then it doesn't make sense to get a true TSE board, and just get a fooler card.

Thanks!

When used on a theme that requires a tsetse to fool the system into thinking it has the lightbox, nothing will ever be displayed on the screen if you hook up a monitor to it's VGA port.  The preferred solution for me has been to use a fooler, smaller and without need of a CF card.

This video confuses me...
One can clearly see that when it hits the bonus round, the topbox lcd is highlighting the edges of the non-existent light boxes?
What is being used to display the bonus round on the LCD?

This is a bb3 stepper, the original game has a lightbox surrounding the top monitor.  The mpu drives both monitors and the lightbox has the other 1/2 of the light up animation, which essentially contains the OZ characters light up as the bonus starts, whichever is lit up at the end is the bonus type.  It uses a lightbox controller (what is essentially the fooler board if you don't have the lit marquee).
