Dust between top screen and glass? Clean?
« on: April 16, 2022, 10:15:31 PM »
Hello,

G23.

I was wondering if it was possible to remove the top box bezel and front glass to clean the dust between the glass and the monitor?

Like can this be done without having to take out the top monitor?

Thanks!!

You have to remove the top monitor and disassemble it so you can get the front glass bezel off.  The safest way is to remove the entire top bezel with the monitor attached, then setting the monitor face down on a soft surface and then remove the monitor from the bezel, they you will have access to the glass screen to clean the casino gunk.  That is the way I've restored the G23's I've worked on.

So I removed the monitor and was able to remove the bezel.  However the glass is stuck to the monitor.  It seems like a putty type gasket is keeping the glass attached to the monitor.  I can not remove it and Im concerned id break the glass if I tried.

The only way to separate the touchscreen from the LCD is to cut it with a flat blade.

That stuff is gooey as heck....it's like black tar.

And you must be careful not to scratch the touchscreen pinstripe-sized circuit traces etched on it or cut into the ribbon cable.

You must get all of that off completely and replace with a new band of it.

I think it's a LOT of work just to clean some dust off a glass.

I did it once and swore never to do it again...lol

I watched a professional cut away the windshield from my car once.

He had the specific tools needed....me? I just used one of those hobby knives with retracting long blades.

The black gooey stuff loves to stick to the blades....it's so dangerous to cut the "rubber" or "putty" but I was able to cut thru it very carefully.

I don't even know what it's called but I was able to buy a small roll of it  (The gooey stuff) on ebay the one time I did this task.

Once I cleaned it all up, I peeled off the paper backing and carefully stuck it all the around the edge and stuck the touchscreen to it.

You only get one shot at getting it right...that stuff is sticky as heck.

Good luck!

It's the non-touch top box screen.  And yeah, I decided to not mess with it.  I was just hoping it would have been easier.

just take the screws that fasten the front metal shroud of the monitor that the glass is adhered to off.  6 or 8 of them if i remember correctly.

I did take everything off.  The glass is now stuck to the monitor by a rubber like gasket.  There are no screws or anything else holding the glass on.

all of my upper monitors have the glass adhered to the metal infront of the actual lcd.  there are screws around the sides of the assembly that will release this metal shell from the rest of the assembly on mine.

OMG THANKS SO MUCH.  That was it.  All I had to do was 2 screws on each side and the entire front came off.  I didn't even have to remove the black bezel.

It was very easy and seems like something that can be done quickly with routine cleaning.

THANKS AGAIN!!

I'm glad you figured it out. I was wondering why you had that issue as all the G23's I've ever restored had the glass bezel attached to its own frame.
