Title: S+ Bill Validator Upgrade
Post by: RobinAK on February 21, 2021, 06:41:29 PM
Hi all so i have 3 machines that have older validators. What all is required for upgrades? What kinda of cost per machine?

The latest that will work on your machine without using a little board called a protocol translator  (kind of costly), is a WBA13.  The latest firmware that works with the S+ will accept all new bills except the new $100's.  If you have a wba type validator, it may just require it to be updated either by a chip or have someone who has the programming hardware do it for you (although it would probably be cheaper to just buy a transport already programmed).  If you don't have a WBA validator, then the cost depends on how many parts you need to buy to retrofit a WBA into your machine. What type of validator is in your machine?

These are the three I have. At one time someone said they were old &  newer ones cold be had for reasonable costs. The one thing is.. I have not seen any of these work. And I am just now getting to these. I enabled the BV on two of the three machines and all the are not taking bills. So now I am thinking I also have other issues.

It could be a weak power supply or a dirty transport.

OK so I think for now this goes on the back burner as I got a few other machines that are higher priority to get dealt with. I'll post back here when I get back on these machines. Jim I got your PM on this thanks.

The DBV45 is very old.
The DBV145 takes bills in 2 ways.
The DBV200 takes bills in 6 ways.
The heads are all interchangeable but to the earlier post the power supply needs to be right sized for the validator. The 145power supply will power up a 200 but it won't reliably accept bills.
The 145 power supplies were also a bit flakey even with the 145s and I was apt to using a 200 supply for the 145.

Regarding bill acceptance you can upgrade the 200 to all the latest money except for the US $100

IF you want to go further the WBA 11/12/13 (WBA is world bill acceptor) will work for the S+ with the same restrictions bur when moving from the DBV to the WBA series you also need to replace your transport.
My recommendation is to either go to the 200 or the 13. The 200 would likely be a lot cheaper.

With regards to activation were you using a SET chip to activate the validator or were you just trying to do that through the menu ? - you will need the SET chip.

Does the 200 take the new 5's?  I thought it took everything but new 5's and 100's.

No it will not take new 5's or new 100's, you are correct Rick.  Also has 4 way acceptance not 6 (typo?).

Four way would be correct, sideways acceptance would be quite rare  :banghead:

Thanks for the information Jay. I appreciate it. Yes I was using set chip. Set machines to 9-1 can see two red leds looking inside the front with all three BV on two different machines but none will suck in a bill. Ill mess with it more when I get the time. For now I'm gonna fix a couple other machines with different issues then get back on these guys.

From a S+ perspective the tell tale is that the bill validator bezel lights up when its activated.
You can check out RICKS FAQ (bottom right of the home page) that has the SET chip instructions.

JCM is the maker of the DBV you can find manuals on their web site.
There is a series of dipswitches on the side which turn on/off various bill acceptance as well as set protocol.

The easiest to test with is a $1 bill. If you get one that lights up - but its not sucking in bills
1. make sure its mounted in the transport right, you will hear it make all sorts of noise when the machine is first powered up.
2. try swapping power supplies.

Did you also set the denom (right after setting the 9-1) with set chip?

Okay so messing with these BV's is on the bottom of my list. But I have made some time to tinker with the. So I finally got one machine to light up the BV lights and after more tinkering I got it to take in bills. Not sure exactly what the cause was. I think it was cash can related. Then I was able to swap out another BV and verify it also works. So so far one machine is working and I know two BV's work. I set up the dom to 5 cents and its a dollar machine.  I can get it to take a 1 or a 20 as that's all I had at the time. Im actually fine with that as its home use machine that I am sending over to my moms house (she played the machine for 3.5 hrs straight the other weekend and had 5 good hits and now she loves that machine lol). As I get more time I'll tinker I'll post back here with anymore questions. Thanks!

Just read this...
My credit union ATM's now take the card sideways. I don't like it! It just seems odd.
Sorry for hijacking!  :hijacked2:

All sorts of new things.... they now have this machine... you put in two slices of bread ... push a button and it comes out as toast.....

I can't wait until they get biometrics right and I can ditch the hundreds of cards, everything from Casino Loyalty cards, gift cards, credit cards....etc
