Title: S2000 Bill Validator Error After power outage
Post by: memays on March 01, 2023, 02:30:15 PM
My S2000 3X 4X 5X PAY has been working without a problem for several years.  After a power outage this week (Ice Storm)  I now get "Bill Validator Error" from the Netplex display and my enhanced Bezel shows the flashing "Ambulance", and "Red X" Icons.   The machine operates perfectly otherwise.

On startup, or when the cash can is inserted, there is no noise or motion from the BV at all.   Looking at the side, there are 2 red LEDs staring back at me, so it looks like it has power.

The Auto-Config Netplex menu (4.3) reports "Bill Acceptor: Installed".  The Options Menu (3.3.1) says "Bill Acceptor ENABLED".  I tried to manually test the validator (SW 1-2-3, 8 ON) as mentioned in an old post here(Quoted below), but no response.   Validator is WBA 12/13SS  :Scratch-Head:

well you could try and eliminate one thing,  first, go into the menus and do an auto re-configure, this will generally tell you that the bill validator is installed, this usually will force the unit to cycle.  second, try and test the transport and head in the machine, remove the transport, remove the cash can,  place switches 1-2-3 and 8 in the on position, turn off the power to the machine, install the transport, turn on the power to the machine, now turn switch 8 off, the unit should cycle briefly, now you should be able to insert bills into the transport, it should accept them and return the bill into the area where the cash can would be.  this will test the transport and head unit.

:duh: So, found that I was reading the DIP switches backwards (old tired eyes).   Ran the tests again and forward and reverse transfer motor tests ran o.k., which indicates that the unit is getting power to run the motors.
So I ran Bill Receiving test, and response was 5 blinks, which according to the WBA manual, is:
ACCEPTOR HEAD ERROR
    * Acceptor Head Not Seated properly
    * Communication problem.
The acceptor head appears to be seated properly, but not sure how to shoot a "Communication Problem" :Scratch-Head:

Replaced BV with a known good WBA-13SS from another machine.   The error is now reported in the Nexplex display as "Bill Validator Comm Error"   If I put the original BV (WBA-12/13SS) in the "Doner" machine, it reports "Bill Validator Error" :banghead: :duh:

Does anyone know if WBA-12SS, WBA-13SS, and WBA12/13SS should be compatible?

They are compatiable as long as the have the proper firmware . ID 024

The original BV is ID 024    The BV I swapped with from the doner machine is ID: 003.

The original BV is ID 024    The BV I swapped with from the doner machine is ID: 003.   Tried to attach photos, but they are too large.
003 will not work.  Must be 024.

Checked all connectors including CN2 (Which is supposed to be the comm lines).  I have 12V in all of the right places and traced it all the way to the BV connector (PIN 1 and 5).  (Not sure how to validate the XMIT, and RCV data lines :Scratch-Head:)

I believe the issue is within the BV.  I have a spare, and thinking of swapping the BV boards to see if corrects the issue.  Not sure if prob is with the Head, or the transport.   Does anyone know if a defective head would stop the BV from initializing?

ok, so the answer is YES!
Swapped just the BV Head unit from the "Doner" machine, and everything now works.  The end result is that I have 3 Transports (All working) and 3 Head Units (2 of 3 are Bad) :applause:

Now will be looking for a replacement Head Unit:    WBA-12/13 ID:024 V3.80

All the US heads are interchangeable (WBA10-13), they do not contain any firmware on them (it's on the transports) so as long as you get working heads, you should be ok.  Also I've never had a bad head stop a validator from cycling, but it doesn't mean it can't happen, I've just never had that happen to me.
