Title: Scammers- Buyer Beware
Post by: Tacman on June 19, 2022, 04:30:50 AM
It has come to my and other Amins and Mods here that scams and attempted scams had occurred. There was a user on NLG that was PM’ing members who were looking for parts, etc. This member would refer the seekers  to another individual with the name Rex Willy or Mr. Rex and provided an email address for this individual. Through email a deal would be reached and payment was sent but the promised items were never delivered. Once NLG was made aware of this, the user making the referrals was removed from the site and banned. Please be aware of future solicitations and use the listed site Vendors or established members.

I know it's been the norm on this site for a long time to use PayPal Friends & Family for payment to save on PayPal processing fees.  The people who were taken in by this scam would have been protected by PayPal if it had been sent as a product payment.  Maybe it would be best to stop the expectation of F&F payment until one has previous experience with the seller.

I always tell the seller that I will pay the extra that he will be out of pocket and not use f&f. Its usually like 3% so an extra $2.10 on a $70 item.
Consider it insurance. They will either agree or I move on.

I hate thieves!

Jay's right though, don't use paypal friends and family (unless it's someone you know and trust), pay a few extra dollars to cover the fee and keep your right to to use them to resolve a dispute if something goes bad.

so far, lesson learned.

no more f&f unless ive personally done business with the seller

my bank uses zelle now, which is free...both ways..no incoming or outgoing expense...ive used it 2 times now without any issues, ill see if it covers issues like this

thanks!!!

We seem to have numerous threads all over the forum on this recent scamming.

As others have stated, not only is it important to use payment methods that offer protection, but use your common sense. Check out the member before sending him money to him, or sending money to some random e mail address given.
Furthermore you can review their posts and see if they're responding to multiple WTB's with similar tactics. That should be a big red flag.
The Admins and global mods really need the senior and regular members to report this stuff right away. I review over all the posts twice daily, but sometimes I just don't catch stuff in the WTB section all the time.
The first time I read about  NLG scammer ronald343 (selling through "Rex Willy") was from an ongoing  thread started by a regular member, warning the others. But that member never reported it to any of the moderators or admins until a few days had passed I believe.

From what I can tell, this scammer didn't respond to the WTB publicly, he just sent PMs to each person so took a few days for them to realize they had been had.

The last time I saw it happen was with some bally 5500 mpu's.  Same method, PM provided the name of contact with the goods that never arrived.

Unfortunately due to recent changes anyone who uses PayPal and sells $600 or more a year will get a 1099 from PayPal. The only way around this is to use friends and family. It's not always about the 3% fee.

Zelle is banking not 3rd party like PayPal and venmo and others. So Zelle does not send 1099. No IRS requirement at this time. I recommend looking into Zelle for that reason.

Are you sure the $600 reporting requirement doesn't apply to Friends and Family?  It was my understanding that is applies to any money transfer.  I know Venmo has the same requirement.

Yes , friends and family is exempt from the reporting. If you research this it will tell you straight up that the only way around it is to do friends and family.

Zelle, is bank to bank, is great if you trust the person you are dealing with but it offers no protection if it's a scam
