Title: Converting a S9000 5R to a T32 - 32" transmissive 3R
Post by: mr-monoxide on March 16, 2017, 05:03:33 PM
Hey guys I had so much fun converting a V20/20 into a V20/32 that I thought I'd step it up a notch and try converting a S9000 5R into a T32 but I have a question about the 3 transmissive reels. Are the 3 reels just regular reels? They look to be as all the "transmissiveness" appears to take place on the monitor but I'm not sure about that. Also I'm positive I'll need some guidance on how to properly hook up all the cables and wiring when I get to that stage. Other than that I think I know what I need to do for the most part unless I'm not taking into account something that I simply don't know. Possibly someone is already familiar with what needs to be done and can offer their input and advice, it will be most appreciated.

They are not regular reels and the controller is different.  I converted my V32 to a T32 and have since just left all the part inside and play my Alpha 2 V32 games using the monitor with the 3 windows for the reels.  I just block the holes with some white paper.  It would be a lot easier to do a V32 to a T32. I'm not sure I would have undertaken the task if I didn't have the V32.  The reel brackets are totally different as well.  They also tend to sit out further than the standard S9000 reels.

Hmm, well I have another V20 that I could attempt using instead. That's my only other option. I only chose the S9 because I thought some of the reel hardware could be used. I had originally thought of converting to a V32 but decided to go the T32 route simply because I can get the transmissive monitor much cheaper but I now realize the cost of the proper reels and controller will probably offset any savings I assume. Not sure really, I don't know what the going price for those parts are. However if I'm understanding your response correctly I don't need those items if I use V32 software. Is that correct?

You can run T32 games on a S9000 reels with no problem. The problem is modifying the S9 cabinet to a V32. Seems like a HUGE project. Seems like it would be better to get a V32 cab then turning a 20/20 style in a Veritical machine...lol

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the monitor mounted to the door. If so I was thinking that all I would have to do then would be to build a new top box to make up for the extended height of the monitor. Or am I completely off base with that line of thought?

Yes, it mounts to the door, but the V32 mounted vertically is so tall, that you would either have to really modify the door to make it fit or buy a v32 door.  Then the other issue is that the hinges of the door extend into the top box, which is also different.  You would have to fashion a topbox to follow the contour of the taller monitor.

The reels are mounted so that they stick out a bit over the lip of the cabinet.  Here are a couple of pictures of the T32 vs a 5 reel S9000.
Also there's a picture of the inside of the T32 so you can see how the monitor mounts to the cabinet.  Notice that the door continues along a straight diagonal, as opposed to the s9000, where the slant in the middle of the cabinet straightens out total vertical when you get to the top box area.

Thanks for the pictures! They answer a lot of my questions. The top box looks fairly straightforward. I can build that and make it work with the door and hinges. I had planned on buying a V32 door from the start as modification of the current door(s) would prove far too difficult.. So now that I'm fairly confident I can make the cabinet work once I get the door my attention turns to the reels. I assume the reels are set forward on T32's to compensate for the increased depth of the monitor and door and if normal reels will indeed work as Charles' picture suggests then modifying the brackets to set the reels forward shouldn't be too much of a problem. If someone could explain how to modify a S9 cable to a V32 that would be most helpful, or maybe just tell me what the difference is between the two. Since this whole project "hinges" on finding a V32 door first, I guess I should start looking for that..

Hang in there with me guys, Your direction and advice is always appreciated and I'm sure I'll need a lot more of it before this is all over...

Which cable are you talking about?

I thought I read somewhere that the cable(ethernet?) that hooked to the original reel bezel had to be modified to hook up to the transmissive monitor. I'm probably just confusing my info..

There's no reel bezel on the T32.  The reels just connect to the MPU through the reel controller board which uses a regular USB cable.  That and power.  It is the same plug used on the S9000 reel controller board.  Based on Coolwave's information, you should be able to use a standard 3 reel set.  The width and size is of the strips are the same as a standard 3 reel alpha machine.

That's exactly what I needed to know, thanks! I do have a question about switching from 5r to 3r. Do I need to change the reel harness and the top mounting bracket where the reels plug in or is that universal to all reel configurations?

I have been gone for a bit and very busy and still so.  The reels for a true transmissive are different on these.  It will be a good project for you and fun as well.  I did this a couple years ago.  Given all proper components it should not be a problem as your previous build.  Lite-max monitor, reels and strips etc. and you can convert any V-32 to a T-32 (factory equipment). No special wires needed to make it work.

Just to make sure Rick - Are the reel spacing between all 3 the same as a standard 3 reel? a couple of inches off and that will screw up the alignment for the transparent display.

I will have to go and measure to be sure the spacing is the same.
