Title: Replacing Blue LEDs on door.....Opinions.
Post by: SlotMechanic on August 05, 2014, 05:30:30 AM
Whats up guys....

Its come to my attention that these Boards with the little blue LED on the door are coming to be hard to find unless you have tons of junk bally alphas.....which lets get real....nobody has them...I recently picked up a bally alpha with one of those LEDs smashed...well after some research I've found one place that has them for 35 bucks a piece...well I got to thinking...I got the driver board....just need the replacement. led....on to mouser and Newark we go...I found some replacement leds for it....I think its like 3 bucks a piece...I just gotta confirm the fwd voltage.....but my question is, what everyone thinks the wattage of the stock lights are. I think I am going to try 5watts....it has a 55 lumen output..and a 100 degree angle...

So tonight I am going to do some testing....see what I'd actually need...

Anybody else research this at all?

Thanks guys

Tom

Let us know what you come up with.. I actually looked into those inexpensive remote controlled color changing LED strips. They cost like $15 on Feebay.. I use them to backlight my Pinball machines.

If the LED swap doesn't work out, Rozzy has a board on her site for $20, shipped.

Ok.....after some DMM Testing these are the results...

Bally made them with these specs...

The LED has a Forward Voltage of about 3.15 volts....The forward current is 220 mA

With those specs you can find a led replacement...which i did from mouser....The specs on the replacement led are the following...

3.2 forward voltage (Perfect match with oem)
350 mA forward current (Just alittle overkill....just won't shine as bright as it could....you could alway change the resistor to max it out...)
3 watts. (I have no clue what the oem is...i will have to test it.)
140 Degree view area... (Should be plenty to what we need.)

These replacement leds are basicly the same exact size as the oem's.

I just bought two of them (5 bucks a peice), and with shipping my total was around $19.00

Not bad.....once i receive them and put them in i will post comparisons with old vs new.

Stay tuned!

Well, i received my new blue leds for the door today....i snapped a few shots of them and installed them! They work GREAT!....they actually are a tad bit brighter then the orginals and the viewing angle is alittle more too!....take a look for yourself!...i am just doing to heat tests...make sure there not heating up or anything....they shouldn't because they are not even at full brightness they could be!....

If you want to do them yourself, here the led you will need from mouser.
630-ASMT-AB31-NMP00

They are $5.46 each unless you get 10 or more for more discounts.

Take a look at the pics....the led on the left in the second and third pic is the new one.

Well some more info,
After having the machine on all day...the new led is not even warm compared to the original. Thats good...less heat is better.

I will also be working on the different boards that have the multi color ones....once i do some testing and find the right led, i will share the info.

Thanks guys!
