Title: J8 Lamp Matrix on the BB1/2/3 Backplane
Post by: idesign on April 28, 2021, 10:10:25 AM
Anybody know what the 16 pin J8 on the backplane is used for?  Labeled LAMP MATRIX.

I wondered if it was for a game like this?...>>>

It's the lights for the standard button panel.

Well, there you go.  I don't have a standard button panel on the BB2 so makes sense

One of the static 14-button decks I have goes into the header under that one called J15 "Game Lamps".

Yea, was just looking at the manual and the standard button deck uses SWITCHES and GAME LAMPS.  So back to my original question then.

I could have sworn the cable that came out of that connector on my BB1 led to the lights.  I will have a look again, but on my bb1 cabinet, that connector goes right to the door, and it is one of the 2 that are used for the standard button deck.

I was wondering if J8 is used to light up certain toppers.  I thought maybe the topper for the Blade uses it but it does not.

Not much info on J8 in the manuals but there at least 3 different errors listed for LAMP MATRIX.  I wish it was better defined.

Rick may be right tho because in the deck settings, there are two static deck options "Standard" and "Common"...as well as the OLED options too.
The "Lamp Matrix" J8 bulkhead header only has 16-pins.

I would guess it's for the "Standard" static deck rather than the Monopoly topbox lights I mentioned earlier.
But then again, who knows?... the manual tells us nothing about that header.

I could check and see what voltages are coming out of the J8 header for you with my multimeter on my bench tester?
Just need a few minutes....might give us  a clue?

update

Okay...Pin#1 is top left...Pin#9 is bottom left.

The Top row has 19.59vdc on pins #5/6/7....Nothing coming out of other pins.

Bottom row is all ground pins  #9-16

No idea what this is for....where do I send the bill? lol

Pin out from the manual is below,  but the BB1 manual shows a lamp matrix board schematic and pin out.  Isn't that used for the EBB deck or am I confusing that with some other board for the EBB.

Does the EBB deck have 8 buttons?
I've never seen one.

If so, then that corresponds with this 16-pin header.
One ground pin for every live pin?

Here is another pic I found in a BB1 manual.  Notice looks like a bet deck cable plugged into J8.  No description though.

It has a [P1] on the harness label.  :sherlock:

Ok, so I traced mine and it goes up to the top box, connector "C"

...but nothing's connected to it?

Sounding more and more like a connector for a topbox game that has a lotta lamps.

It would be slightly weird to have a button deck of any kind up there that high.... :rotfl:

I would think the 3 pins that I found on the J8 header earlier this evening, that is over 19 volts each, is quite a bit for simple deck lamps?

No, there's nothing connected to it, and this is on my dual screen bb1.  I will have a look at my mother's cabinet this weekend.  She has an original goldfish with the coral reef and the lights, but I seem to remember those lights were connected to a light controller of some sort.
