Title: S+ pinball feature question
Post by: Phan000 on January 08, 2023, 07:33:44 AM
Doing some cleanup on an s+ pinball that has been in storage for years.

Got it working properly- but bonus pinball feature does not make noise when played.

Thinking it should?  I’ve never see one in person befor.

Thanks.

You have a 10Mhz or 16MHz MPU in it?

okay...With your MPU, the volume is adjusted by the settings.
Page<zero> 3
(1) is loud
(9) is low....backwards haha
What SP GAME PROM chip is installed? SP1272?
I could post you an SP chip PSR sheet you can look at to see what I mean by changing the volume thru the settings.

There(https://i.imgur.com/aiWpBNn.jpg) is sound during normal game play,  just not the bonus

feature, until it adds the winning credits.

Do you think you could pull out and re-seat those two chips (SS Reel & SP Game) without bending the legs?
I'm wondering if your sound is a software problem?
That's a Type 32 game.
Anyways, this is from the 980PSR...>>>

Reel Game
Volume Control <0> [3]   Sets the volume for all sounds and music produced by the sound generator (for the reel game).
Options range from loudest volume level {1} to lowest volume level {9}.
This option defaults to {1} on cold power up.

Pinball Bonus Mode
Volume <0> [58]   Determines the volume for the pinball bonus mode.
Options range from off {0} to loudest {10}.

Pinball Attract Mode
Timeout <0> [59]   Determines the amount of time, in minutes, before the attract mode begins.
The range is from 0 to 10.
If set to zero, the attract mode is disabled.

Here some tests you can try...>>>

Pinball Test <22>   Activates diagnostic tests (i.e., lights, sounds) for the pinball bonus mode.
Press the Spin Reels player switch to step through the pinball features.
Press the Change switch to activate the test.

You have a special computer in the topbox that might control sounds too as your S+ is not a regular S+ cabinet.
It's possible the bonus sounds are generated from a sound chip in that topbox computer?
I'm not sure on this but according to the PSR, you can change the Bonus volume in the settings.

I've only had one heavy-as-heck Barcrest topbox set-up (Jewel Of The Crown) and I don't know exactly how it worked.
I'm going to step away and leave this to the Barcrest experts.

Missing sound for the Pinball bonus is usually the connection on the coin tray speaker.

I’ll mess with that coin tray speaker later today.

That does make sense as it was wire-nutted and suspect looking.

I adjusted both of the volume pots in the top box as well as the 58, but no joy.

That was it.  I used some jumpers & got sound.  Thanks for the suggestion!

Two volume pots in the top box?

I guess I've never looked closely in mine -- can you tell me where you saw those? I've adjusted my bonus volume through the self test menus, but it's still loud as heck. I'd love to be able to make it quieter...

MPU4 games (the ones with the beige audio card up top, like Pinball) volume is controlled by the volume pot on that card. Lower left side of the card.

MPU5 games volume is controlled in the menu.

Oh, where it says "volume"?  :duh: :duh: :duh: :duh: :duh:

Geez, I wish I would have asked this a couple of years ago. I tried to lower the volume in the settings a couple of years ago and it made it insanely louder, with no way to make it quieter. I finally resorted to putting a piece of cardboard between the speaker and the tray just to muffle it. That pot was set to its maximum -- I dialed it back to just over half and it's SO much better for my home use. Thank you, Harvs.

Just fixed my sound because of this. Wire came loose from tray speaker.  Thanks for these forums.. IGT S+ Pinball.

Phan000,

I notice that the circle of lights on the top box are out. They should be on constantly whenever the machine is powered up. I have the same machine.

That is correct. Those tiny little bulbs are called Tivoli bulbs. A Google search of "tivoli bulb slot machine" will yield some results.

How many Tivoli bulbs do you need? I have a bag of them

It's just an observation I noted in Phan000's photo. The machine is powered up but none of those Tivoli bulbs are lit up. Something must be disconnected or maybe a bad connection? Those bulbs are normally on all the time.
