Dotmation DS1 Fail LED flashing
« on: January 15, 2023, 08:34:49 PM »
I have Jackpot Stampede Deluxe that is refusing to boot.  I have some manuals that I have found online but they do not provide a reason for the symptom I am seeing.  I have a suspicion that it is a watchdog circuit that making the flash but I don't have enough information.

When I turn the machine on all the power LEDs are on and bright.  The DS1 LED starts flashing immediately.  The Dotmation goes through its' start up process and appears to be ready for the system to communicate with it.  No front panel LEDs illuminate.  The bill acceptor runs through its' initial test process and eventually stops.  No lamps other than the fluorescents come on.

I believe the MPU board is okay as I've seen it power up and work in another machine.  Is there a watchdog circuit on the IO Board?  Does the DS1 lamp tied to the watchdog circuit on the MPU?  Does either board even have a watchdog or am I barking up the wrong tree.  Yes, the pun was intentional.

Despite the lights on the I.O board, it just sounds like your lower power supply is gone.  There shouldn't be any flashing lights anyway, but there are various observations when the power fails yet the symptoms are the same (no activity on the game (less Dotmation and BV), reels are loose, no bong sound, game is dead in the water).

Playklax was correct.  Replaced the lower PS and all is working.  I believe that the lower PS was having trouble keeping the voltage up where it needed to be.  A cap kit might have fixed it but I like the better fix of a better PS.

Happy it worked for you!  If you are electrically inclined, recapping the power supply would be a good idea, just to have a spare(s).  These machines are ~30 years old at this point and parts are hard to find.  I always pick up anything WMS just to have a backup.  If you can get your hands on a spare Dotmation screen, that would be a good idea as well.

The power supplies (both top and bottom) on WMS machines are its Achilles heel.  The rest of the parts (less the Dotmation) are strong.  I have no idea what exactly goes bad in them, but I know it's on the little board that sits on top of the main board inside the power supply.

OEM units are pretty much unobtainium now.  And the ATX conversion at the top of this forum is becoming hard to do since they don't make that unit style much either.
