Title: BB3 reboots above 80 degrees
Post by: Newbooty on April 18, 2024, 02:42:59 PM
So I got a new game yesterday and loaded it.  This is the first time I have owned my BB3 in the spring.  My garage stays about 90 degrees all summer.  After about half an hour the machine rebooted. Then about every 20 minutes after over and over.  I checked the cabinet  temp. It was running between 94 and 97 degrees.  This morning turned the slot on and it ran no problem and temp was around 78 degrees.  Is there a max temp that we should not be running these at.  I know in the casinos they got AC on all the time, but my garage not so much.  Thanks.

I don't think it's the ambient temp that's the issue.  More likely slow/stopped/blocked fans so the CPU itself is getting too hot.

I'd take compressed air to the fans in the CPU box and cabinet and ensure they're spinning freely and pushing air.  If not, replace.
And ensure the vents for air in/out of the cabinet aren't totally clogged with dust.  Mine were when I got mine and I cleaned them all out.  :)

It is starting to warm up here and sure enough the BB3 has started its rebooting again.   Anything over 80 degrees causes the reboot.  All fans are working fine.  Heat syncs feel fairly cool.  I check the temp from diagnostics and its humming along at 97 degrees.  I watched the board during a reboot and nothing seems out of place.  As soon as the the temp in the garage was down to 78, the reboots stopped.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,

Does your mpu have the door installed?

Nope.  No door.  It was like that when I bought it.

Get a door.  The door needs to be there as it assists with the cooling of the MPU.  Reboots can also be caused by a bad power supply.  I’d never feel comfortable leaving a machine to run in a 90+ degree temperature garage.

Thanks,
Jason

That's interesting. I thought that it would actually run cooler with the door off, but if the fan is causing positive pressure then what you say makes sense.  Now for the hunt to find a door.  Maybe tap plastics :).  Thanks for the insight.
