Fortune II game chips programming
« on: February 01, 2017, 05:18:18 PM »
I have an F2 with one or two bad game chips (joker wild poker). They did work before. I now have just a basic draw poker game chips and it works fine.
Would it make any sense to copy them (they don't look original) and try burning the files to new EPROMs?
And if I try, are these BIN files?
I can't seem to find anyone with joker wild poker and I'm curious if the proper data would transfer over even if chip was bad.
I hope this doesn't sound completely stupid!  :duh:

If the chip truly is bad then it probably wouldn't work with the eprom burner to access the data and copy it. But it won't hurt to try, and if the eprom burner works with the chip and gives you a checksum, doesn't throw an error, that is an indication the chip is ok and you can transfer the data to another eprom. You don't have anything to lose.

Some of these old video poker games have their software archived on the various MAME websites, they are usually a free download. You might find your machine's game software there.  I think the last time I looked for one I googled "MAME video poker" or something similar.

A BIN file is short for a "binary" file, I believe it technically refers to a file where the data from an eprom is stored in a format that is all 1's and 0's. It is an early format, simple and works fine but the file is longer than it would be if the same data is stored in hex format. Nowadays many eprom data files are stored as hex files. But people sometimes call any file that came from an eprom as a bin file. Many eprom programmers can recognize the file's data format when you load the file and use whatever it is. The beginning of the file often has an identifier (special code number sequence) that tells the eprom burner what the file format is.

When you copy the eprom with your eprom burner and save the file it will get stored in whatever format your burner uses, and it may give you the choice of what format you want to use, like binary, hex, octal, etc. The data inside the eprom is binary, just 1's and 0's. And even if the file is a hex file, when it gets loaded into your eprom burner and is then burned into an eprom it goes in and is stored in binary.

Binary file:
10001110010001001.......

Hex file:
F209C466D2BB8AA73ED....

Sorry for late response! I've been working and preparing for my upcoming "vacation" I'll be having after major cervical spine surgery.  :hissyfit:

My burner displays  the checksum and doesn't show any errors. But it doesn't indicate what kind of file it is. It will allow me to choose hex, bin, etc, but I don't know what IGT used for the F2.
I guess I can just try each type and see. BIN didn't work.

Try hex choice and see if it works.

Good luck on the medical "vacation", try not to bother the Candy-Strippers too much (or is that Stripers?)   :garfield:

I think you are allowed no more than 2 sponge-baths per day.

Mark.. What burner do you have? The Fortune 1 machines used Texas Instruments chips. They had a different pin out then the other 2716 eproms. You needed a special burner or adaptor to do them. As for the F2 I'm not sure if they were the same as F1.
When are you having the surgery?
Please remember to make a donation to NLG for mine/our help in repairing your machines problem.. Your donations help keep this site on line.
And remember...
If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

It's an EZ Pro something? I need to get home and look but my dang internet is out so it will be tomorrow. I thought I heard about something being different on the programming for those.
My surgery is Tuesday. :(
