Title: Early S2000, What was the first year?
Post by: Ash100 on February 14, 2020, 03:04:41 PM
Greetings,

I have what I believe to be a very early S2000, mfg date of 12/97. But I don't know for sure when the transition from S+ to S2000's occured.

My machine does have some differences from the 2000's we're all used to seeing. Things like recessed top stereo speakers instead of ears and no subwoofer speaker in coin tray. These are the 2 main differences anyway. The rest is pretty standard for the S2000 models of a later date.

Does anyone know when they went from one to the other? Is my machine perhaps a hybrid and worth more?

It's an I Dream of Jeannie 3 Reel Single Pay Line 2CM game if that makes any difference.

Just curious, nothing more. Thought it was kinda neat having one.

Attached is a picture of the too speaker design.

Thanks, Curtis ash100

I don't think IGT did the transition in one calendar year Ash.
As a manufacturer, they had tons of parts they had to get thru and merge it in the plant with the newer stuff.
I'm sure they found those speakers too expensive to make and went with with cheaper produced "panda" ears.
Plus , putting the speakers outside allowed for more topbox internal space because they wanted to go with the vision and soon-after reel touch platforms.

That makes sense and I understand that production overruns between 2 models can and probably did happen.

I've seen S+ machines dated 1996 and 1997, so I thought it odd to find an S2000 dated the same year as the previous model machines.

The speakers are pretty neat, all metal construction unlike the plastic ears found on most of their other products. Probably won't ever find a replacement speaker like that one. The missing bottom speaker is kind of a bummer, not as good of sound quality as the enhanced audio of the 3 speaker system.

The speakers were probably a trade off, get rid of the costly metal framed ones and add 2 cheaper plastics and a subwoofer.

As far as the rest of the internals, it's pretty much all S2K.

Thanks for your input. I'll probably hang on to this one for a while. I may search out some IGT training videos and see if I can spot another cabinet like the one I've got.

I have an early S2000 "Five Times Pay" with the same cabinet speaker. The mfg date is 8/99.   I have an S+ dated 4/98.  One disadvantage of this style of speaker is the space it takes up inside the top box. There is no place to install a printer.
