Bell-O-Matic Mills Slot Machine
« on: April 14, 2021, 03:13:46 PM »
Just got my second slot machine. All I know about it is the brand. Going to do some digging around.

Looks interesting. Can you post a photo of the mechanism? Are there any original labels on the inside of the cabinet or the door?

I added some photos to my profile, please let me know if you can see them. I can't figure out how to post multiple photos to a comment.

Click REPLY. At the bottom left just below the text box there is a green link "Attachments and other options"
Click that and you'll see Attach: in red. Below that is the box you click to choose file.
Should be self explanatory from this point. You can add 5 files. If the file size it too big, reduce it. If you're on a phone (site displays MUCH better using a real computer) just e mail the photos to yourself and usually (at least on my iPhone) you can bump the size down.

It appears to be a 777 Hightop Mills Bell-O-Matic... Not sure if it is called a Hightop for sure, because the face is a bit different from others.

Well, here is my thought!
In 1933 Mills Novelty Company came out with a model they called the "Extraordinary", example shown below, later on Mills Bell-O-Matic, which had a location in Reno/Sparks in the 50's if memory serves me correctly, and primarily produced Open Front slot machines for the casinos may have in a limited fashion re-introduced the Extraordinary in the style you show however I must say whenever I think I've seen everything something I have never seen before comes along, this being an example of that!

The "Extraordinary Bell" was introduced in 1933 for the Chicago Worlds Fair, with a "Century of Progress" theme. This is not one of them. It's much later, 1939 at least, because it has "single cherry pays 2" which first appeared that year. I've never seen one quite like this, with light up panels.

Mills Bell-O-Matic was spun off in 1947 as a distributor for Mills Industries, which was in trouble post-war and was liquidated in 1953. Bell-O-Matic opened a manufacturing plant in Reno in 1951 when the Johnson Act made things difficult and took over producing the Mills line, including the Hi Top. My best guess is that this machine was one of their early efforts before they got hold of the Hi Top tooling, which they eventually sold to Sega in 1963.
I wonder how it makes the "special 50 award" - can't be from the regular tube.

The original poster seems to have vanished!
I also noticed the "reject" cup is full of quarters. Maybe the escalator needs some adjustments.

"reject cup"

I didn't know that was what it was until recently, I thought it held the "jackpot" so i put those quarters up there.

My wife doesn't want me to adjust the escalator, she likes being able to load it up with 5-6 quarters. I had fixed it, she didn't like it, so I broke it again.

Allowing 5-6 "pulls" without putting in coins isn't the design of the escalator. The release pin is jammed, or engaged.  The coin you drop in the head allows the handle to release. When you pull, the entire line moves to the right, opening up the space where the coin went in, and locking the handle. I guess you can play it that way but eventually you're going to wear something out. And, escalator parts aren't cheap.
The jackpot is right in front, where it says "JACKPOT." That reserve is released when you hit three bars. It fills when the coin tube fills up, then the rest goes to the cashbox. The coins displayed in the glass look like they're just taped in there. They should be just packed in. They literally fall in there from a chute.

How would this mechanically release if you hit a jackpot?

Its a manual payout for the jackpot, it doesn't have the mech.

Can you add a photo of where the jackpot mechanism was?

I bought a Mills Black Cherry a few years back and was delighted the jackpot mech was all intact.
