Title: Sound Issue
Post by: SteveXKR on September 25, 2019, 10:10:10 AM
Hi All,
So on one of my slots i'm chasing a sound issue, and while i'm working my way down I figured if anyone has any insights.
This is on my Little Green Men Family Reunion machine, and when pressing a button (or screen), the 'click' or 'touch' sound comes out of the 2 small front speakers.
The actual 'game' sounds though (winning, sound effects etc) are VERY VERY VERY faint in the background somewhere.. every so often there's a crackle and pop/static and then the sound might
work for a little while , and it sounds like the actual game sounds are only coming out of an internal 3rd speaker in the head cabinet (mounted back right), but still not out of the front speakers..
It sounds like a bad connection somewhere and/or something not being amplified properly..

I replaced the inline amplifier board in the head, but that did NOT fix anything.
Next I figured i'd swap the cable to that larger speaker from the board to the speaker with a known good one (from my other slot) and that did not fix anything either.
Now i'm working my way down to the plug at the bottom of the head and the main backboard and seeing if those plugs are corroded or bad, or maybe cracked solder joints etc..

Any other suggestions what it could be?

Also, is the actual game sound only supposed to come out of that 3rd speaker?

Thanks!

It's likely a bad MML board. I've had several go bad.

That's the raised secondary board in the tray right? Maybe I'll swap it with my other game and see if that does anything

Ok - swapped the soundboard with my other one and success!

The other slot is having some issues anyway so I don't mind the down time :)

Thanks guys!
RB - expect another pM :)

NooB question...

Are we talking 044 or 3902 or would it be the same for all?
After a little searching on NLG it appears to be the board for a simm?  So 3902 or earlier?  044 is a different problem?

Thanks...

The 3902's def can take a MML board. I don't own a 044 so I can't say for sure but I don't believe they take them? (again not sure here). Also just FYI there are 2 types of MML (multimedia lite) boards, one takes eproms and the other will take a SIMM

Rep is correct. No MML sound board or simms with 044.  Just a flash board with a boot chip.

going into uncharted territory but is it worth 'upgrading' to an 044 from an 3902? are there more games availalbe? backwards compatible?

Honestly the only thing holding me back from going 044 is money. It's tough with the disability income. 044 is a great platform, can handle MUCH more than the 3902 and yes with a legacy board it can use/play chips/game sets from the 3902 library

a down side to the 044 platform, the flash boards are super static sensitive!  i swear just looking at a board can also make is go into sha failure.

though there has been a revelation with the boot 39 chip which can disable the zero check and sha making the boards able to boot.

Indeed. I've heard the same. The new boot chips I've heard about and seen a vid of are AMAZING, boots SOOOOO quick and even has keychip options with the one I saw/was told about. No need to swap it to key anymore and the fast boot... I was AMAZED!!

I have the 39 chip in two of my games and it is awesome. Boot/keychip in one - super fast booting. Every 044 flash board should come with this.
