Title: Holy Deep Pocket Socket Batman! Ouch
Post by: RiseLikeRa on October 22, 2014, 03:06:37 PM
Gang after posting to switch or not to switch regarding my Fortune Coin (IGT) 21 game deal socket, and getting lots of view but no replies, I decided to do a little investigation.  I called the Electro Mech company directly.  Good news!  The customer service rep stated that he was familiar with the 65 CS350 (Photo 1)  socket in my old game and the company still makes them.  REALLY bad news,  in that same breath he stated that IF the socket was in stock 1 (One) would cost $100 because that is their minimum order amount.  IF the socket was not on the shelf then they would have to make it and 1 (one)would cost $200!!!!!  When I asked him if I could substitute the older socket for the newer one 65EL CS 350 (Photo 2) he said that he did not know.

The rep said that he would send me a quote via email for the what must be a solid gold socket.  I am starting to really like my non illuminating Deal button.

Have you inspected the socket to see if it's repairable? If it's not I would have to believe someone has a bucket full of those laying around. Try eBay using their model number

Cowboy I bet that you are 100% correct.  Those sockets, since they were in the early Draw poker machines, are scattered all over the country.  I know one thing for sure, I aint paying $100 for a single button socket.

That socket looks to be round, how many pins? Maybe a socket for a vacuum tube would work? They are cheap.

Another thing that might work are some female pins for some sort of connector. You would need a good junk box, or a friends junk box to dig through or a lot of looking in catalogs. Find something that will grip the pins and make your own connector body with epoxy. If only a few pins are used, you could just solder the wires to the female pins you hunt up and shrink tube over them.

Polara:

That is a great idea to try and find some female connectors.  The guy at Electro Mech got back to me with a quote for 1 single socket.  $250 shipping not included!!  That will not happen.

The search continues...

Those older "sockets" had two sets of switches, when one switch failed we moved the wires to the other side (switch).

Bad.  Thanks again.  So If I understand correctly, I should leave the two center connections on for the light and switch terminal 1,2,3 for  4, 5 , and 6?

Yes but I don't remember what smaller number matches up with the larger number so use your Ohm meter to determine Normally Closed and Normally Open.

Things just went south with those last instructions.  Lol.  I have an ohm meter but have never used it.  Not sure what readings I should be getting but I am game to try.

Put it on Ohms and touch the leads together, the zero indicates a circuit is connected, or a switch is closed.

Remove the e-mail from the public posts, otherwise search engine bots will get a hold of it and next thing you know, all kinds of junk mail invade your mailbox.

Dave:

I spoke to Gordy already.  We had a great conversation and apparently he believes that he does have my switch socket. That is REAL good news.  We both spoke highly of you.  Perhaps by the end of the week I will have the socket here and I will try to instally it Saturday morning.

Thanks again and I will update you with all new developments

Problem Solved, for the most part.  First a special thanks to Dave (Fatman) and Badbaud and all others who helped me through this issue.  I did not have the nerve or the knowledge to break out the old ohm meter as suggested by Badbaud.  I think that if I had known what terminals to switch the wires to on the old socket I would have given it an attempt.  Absent that I took the punk way out.

Dave I did contact Gordy.  Thank you so much for all of you efforts to get us connected.  Once we spoke I sent him the two pictures that I posted here.  Dave and Gordy are both wonderful and knowledgeable gentlemen to deal with.  To make a long story short he did not have the older/shorter socket.  I installed a longer newer sock, my picture #2 using the same terminal numbers.  With no room to work while the socket is hooked up to the game I extended the wires from terminals A,B,1,2,3 while on the bench.  For the hook up to the games I opted to use the always handy 3M Scotch locks.  There was lots of room to tuck in the extra wire under the control board.

All went well.  The "Deal"  button now sits lowed on the deck than the other buttons because of the new socket.  I wanted it to all match up but since Deal is off to the side it does not look bad at all.

Thanks again everyone for your guidance.  Final result pictured.

Ya ,those older buttons were a trip.

We used to make a small hook at the end of a straightened paper clip, slip it down between the button top and housing, turn it 90 degrees and tug up on the wire pulling the cap out of the housing. The lamp was wedged inside the cap.

You tradition lives on!  Bill who is on this list and who sold me the Jokers Wild Poker told me about that trick also.   I have used it many times.  When I was younger I would rebuild GM tramsmissions.  The book says that you need all of these specialzed tools. I was 18 years old and could not afford them.  A home made scribe with a small hook on the other end proved priceless.

These is more than one way to skin a cat if skinning cats are what you are in to.

Josh:

Thank you for the support.  I feel the same way about the location of the button.  If it were in between two higher sitting buttons it would look terrible.  Off to the side like it is only a NLG member would be the wiser. :-)  I will however keep a passive eye out for the correct socket.  Not anxious to do that soldering again but if I find the right socket I will.  For now I am just going to double down, pun intended, and enjoy the game.

Thank everyone for their help and guidance.
