Title: Amstar Games
Post by: channelmaniac on May 04, 2014, 05:40:54 PM
Model: Phoenix
Symptom: No video. Whining sound from speakers

The board was stored someplace where it got wet & had what looked like leaf residue on it.

Cleaned the bottom board and replaced all 12 ROM sockets. Replaced the K1 and K2 EPROMs as they had pins that rusted off at the body.

No change. All ICs appeared dead. There was no clock signal. Replaced a bad 7404 IC to fix the clock. Game would boot but had garbage on the screen and would randomly reboot.

Replaced 1 74LS244 IC and 1 2114 SRAM ICs that had corroded legs. The rust on the 2114's legs went up the pin into the body of the IC.

Played a few games to test the system.

Model: Phoenix
Symptom: Dead. Missing 3 chips and 17 capacitors. Has 2 pulled traces.

Obvious trace damage on board - 2 traces were sticking up from the board and there were 2 missing pads on IC17. IC17 was also missing. The CPU socket was partially melted from a soldering iron.

Replaced missing IC17. Patched 2 broken traces. Replaced bad CPU socket and replaced the missing 8085 CPU. Replaced broken IC48 on the video board.

Replaced 17 missing capacitors and 1 incorrect resistor to fix the sound subsystem.

Symptom: Board sync output is bad

Board had some kind of output on the sync pin but it was incorrect. Found that the board was modified. 1 trace was cut and 2 were jumpered. Reset the board back to factory, replaced the broken sound pot, and tested.

Symptom: No sync

Cap C30 was scraped off the bottom board and a trace damaged. Installed a new cap and patched the trace to fix the sync. Board would boot but crash during attract mode. Replaced bad ROM at IC46 and cleaned the edge connector then tested. Replaced a physically damaged filter cap at C34 and audio cap at C22 to fix a warble attack sound problem. Tested.

Model: Phoenix
Symptom: Dead

Replaced C2 to fix reset circuit and IC36 to fix the stuck ALE signal from the CPU. CPU board would then boot with a known good bottom board. Replaced a broken C32, replaced the volume pot, and cleaned the edge connector to fix missing audio. The bottom board was missing signals from RAM. Replaced a Fujitsu 74LS244 and 2 Fujitsu 74LS245 ICs tied to the data lines that were missing some signals. Replaced bad 2114 RAM at IC 27 to finish the bottom board and tested the game.

Symptom: Dead

Cleaned CPU board. Replaced corroded CPU socket. IC10 decodes the address lines and enable the ROMs for reading - and all it's outputs were stuck high. Replaced IC10 and the board would boot but crash after the big word Phoenix was on the screen - when the bird under it would move. Replaced IC52 on the bottom board to fix that. Replaced a broken volume pot and patched a trace to it to restore audio. Replaced broken filter cap C30. The board would now boot and play properly, but colors were wrong. Pin 3 of the 74LS157 on the CPU board had no input signal. Replaced CN2 on the ROM board and the ribbon cable between the boards as someone sprayed oil in it and it wasn't making connection. Retested the game.
