Title: Goodnight, sweetheart.... goodnight?
Post by: Railroader Travis on October 18, 2017, 10:15:38 PM
My 4-reel s2000 decided around 11:50PM CDT As I was sitting near it... simply shut down while still switched on. Obviously caught my attention....   the only thing that shows signs of electricity is the cabinet door light.  Besides that, the machine is dark, and no signs of life when I switch it on.

PS - no loose wires everything within reach is plugged in well.

first thing i would check is powersupply

Also check any fuses in the machine.

What fuses & where?

Also what am I looking for with the power supply

The only fuses ae at the lower edge of the mother board on S2000 enhanced. One is for the cabinet circuit, other for the door. It's unlikely that both are blown. Check the power cord to be sure it's plugged in good inside the machine. Re- seat the power supply behind the reels. Some times they are left loose (not screwed in). If there's no problem there it's likely that the power supply went bad.

Well, then cabinet door light comes on when the door opens... wouldn’t that not come on if the power supply went bad?  When I get off work today I’ll check out the power supply and see if everything is seated properly.
Power cord is plugged in just fine. When you say re seat it, what do you mean?

The fluorescent lights inside a slot machine are usually wired directly to the ac power input and not connected to the power supply output. So the power supply can be bad but your machine general lighting will still work ok. These fluorescent lights operate from 115 volts, so they are not connected to any of the power supply voltages. I think in some slot machines you could even remove the power supply and the fluorescent lights would still work.

You’ve got the idea incorrect.  The flourescent lighting does not come on at all. The only light that comes on is the cabinet door light, that is toggled with a switch when the door opens and closes. It’s a small incandescent bulb behind the cash box/bill validator. Besides that, no other lights come on, nor does the machine.

On an s2000 the fluorescents should ran off the power supply. The service light has its own power supply in the communications box.

In that case it just about has to be the power supply. The door light that is coming on is probably as I described but since the other interior lights are connected thru the power supply and are not working then the power supply has likely failed or has a loose/bad cable connector. Also, some power supplies have an ac line filter module inside where the ac power cord comes into the power supply. If that power line filter fails it will not let any 115 volts thru. You can replace the line filter or bypass it. It's there to keep one machine from interfering with another one on the same ac outlet in a casino, usually not needed for home use.

Service light is 12v dc not 110 ac. Most likely line filter is good. If it was bad it wouldn't  have any power. Other than the 2 power supplies (main behind reels and the one behind the comms board) and some optional parts nothing in an s2000 runs directly off 110.

the fact that the service lamp is on will eliminate the power cord, filter, and fuse,(there is a pop up type fuse located on the power distribution box), the power comes in through all those and goes directly to two terminal blocks, the A/C is routed from these terminal blocks to the power supply inside the power distribution box, it outputs a +5 vdc and +12vdc, the +12 vdc is used to power the service lamp, the + 5vdc goes to the comms  board in the power distribution box.  the 110 volts a/c also goes from the terminal block1 and 2 through a connector up to the power on/off switch, from there it goes to terminal blocks 3 and 4, from there it is routed to the power supply input.  outside of a connector issue, the only other active device  that would interrupt the power is the on/off switch. more than likely your power supply is bad, you can check the voltages real quick with out removing anything. the power coming from the supply is all present at the power connector J-13 on the motherboard, its the first connector on the bottom right side of the mother board,  unplug the connector, stick meter probes in the following pins and observe the voltage, any red wire and black wire with a red tracer will have +13vdc, any orange wire and black wire with a orange tracer will have +25vdc. the +25vdc is used to run the electronic ballast that power the fluorescent lamps.

hope this helps

Jim

If a florescent ballast is bad it could be shutting down the power supply. You might want to try unplugging each ballast on the input side and then try to power it up. On a normal upright S2000 there are three of them. One in the belly, one in the top box and the last one on the left side of the case to power the reel bulb located in the door.
If that doesn't work then the power supply is suspected.

I actually had this happen the other day there was a loud pop then the cabinet went black.

I replaced the power supply and that solved the issue.
