Title: Bally Alpha NVRam Write Error
Post by: tjlee on November 25, 2014, 04:04:00 PM
First of all my experience with Bally Alphas is very limited.  I am working on a Bally Alpha Video machine with a 512MHZX brain box in it.  I cannot get the NVRam to clear.  I have tried using two different BIOS chips (807/809) with the clear cards(312/320) with no luck.  I know the BIOS chips and clear cards are good as I have used them before on other Alphas with no problems.  I have changed batteries on MPU and the battery on the backplane.  I need help with this as again I have not worked all that much with Alphas.  Picture of the error is shown below.  Jurisdiction chip is ageneric one.  Thanks

Do you have another MPU to try?  The NVRAM ic could be bad.

Right now I don't.  I will see if I can get hold of one somewhere for testing.  Is the NVRam replaceable on the MPU.  I can do SM reflow here I just need to know which chip to replace and with what??  Thanks

I read in a place once (I don't remember) where a casino tech was having issues with the NVRAM on a bally alpha.  Because he had gaming commission stickers all over the place he didn't want to break up to change ic's etc.  He replaced the MPU power supply for kicks and it solved the issue.  You might also want to try that.

I have several parts MPU's being shipped to me.  I will switch supplies when they get here.  Do you know which IC is the NVRam on the board??  It would save time hunting for it as my eyes aren't all that good at reading small print.

Don't believe that is replacable-surface mount pretty sure.  When I say not replaceable I mean you cannot just remove and install, Once identified as failed it could be repaired with proper equipment and parts.  If you get in a bind I have Brand new 512's in static bag for 100.00 plus shipping and used -tested for 65.00 plus shipping.

Thanks for reply.  OK on the MPU's  If I need one I will get back with you next week.  I will see if I can find one for testing first to make sure that is the problem.  Do you have any idea which IC is the NVRam on this board??  I have reflow equipment in the shop here.     Thanks to all for helping.  TJ

Well problem solved here.  Used another MPU and slot clears OK.  Game loaded up and runs fine.  Thanks for all the suggestions.
