Getting cigarette smell out of fan-cooled machines
« on: April 16, 2022, 06:58:04 PM »
Greetings,

Bought a gamemaker from a heavy smoking household.

I stripped the outside, wiped off the surface tar, but it still blows a musty breeze.

This will be a gift for my in-law, and she won’t enjoy the authentic casino scent.

Any tips for getting it smelling fresh?  Thought about swapping the cooling fan.

I would replace all the cooling fans with new. You will find there is a large amount smoke and dust accumulated after you remove the fan. All intake and exhaust vents with screens will be clogged with smoke and dust. You would have to strip the entire guts of the machine and wash all the components. And it still might not be free of the smell. The monitor, power supply, and bill validator accumulate a lot of smoke and dust. Take out all the glass and wash it.

I am not familiar with your machine, but the WMS AVP I bought had that terrible stale tobacco odor. I probably wouldn’t have noticed it on a casino floor, but in a 12’ x 13’ room, the smell was overpowering (especially when it warmed up). I solved the problem by fixing a bucket of white vinegar with water (50/50) and wiping down all the interior (and exterior) surfaces with a damp rag soaked with the solution (wear gloves). If your machine has any fabric or mesh filters around the fans, soak them in solution, rinse and dry. Fill a small dish with baking soda and set it on the bottom of your machine (change it weekly). In my case, it took about a month  before I didn’t notice the smell any longer.

I agree with attempting to use a solution and wipe all surfaces. Fabreez antimicrobial and a toothbrush in the corners and nooks. Maybe try a q-tip to get inside the fan assembly while holding a vacuum to suck the debris. Then let it air out with the door open. You will need to brush off the circuit boards with alcohol on a brush too. If you opt to remove the exhaust fan on a GameMaker…enjoy the month! Lol
Not sure what format you have but you would have to remove the metal frame on mine. They could have done this a dozen better ways but their focus was airflow.

I agree with cleaning etc. I have an S2000 that was very stinky for 2 years. Even after cleaning it would come back from somewhere. I tried baking soda. It helped some. I then got some 'Bamboo charcoal air purifying bags' from Amazon. I put one in the bottom box and one in the top. Worked wonders!

Wow, this looks promising! I'm going to give these a try.  I thoroughly take apart the machines as I get them and clean each component, and there's always residual smoke smell, so I'm going to give these a go and see if it finally clear up the smell on the machines that are stubborn.

Thanks for all the advice.

On this gamemaker, It looks tough to remove the fan, so I’ll try to clean it first.

Will also clean all the other inside surfaces and just bought the charcoal
Bags.

I had bought a different gamemaker from the same guy a few years ago.  Smelled just as bad.  It did go away eventually, but I need to expedite this for my in-law.

Thought about opening the door and blowing a fan on it for a week or so.

I use a cleaner called Awesome!. It's only $1 per bottle and can be found at most grocery stores.

Each machine I get in to refurbish gets washed inside and out with this stuff.

If you're comfortable taking out the Glass, Power Supplies, MPU and anything else that doesn't need to get wet, I suggest you do that.

I leave all of the wiring in, and Backplane Board, then spray the cleaner all over the inside of the cabinet and watch the Nicotine and Tar just melt off. Quick rinse with a garden hose and leave it overnight to dry. Compressed air also helps to get the residual water out.

Reassemble and test everything and you should be stink free.

@ash100

Couldn't agree more.  :I_agree_1: That stuff is... well Awesome.  It's actually called "LA's Totally Awesome" and is cheapest at Dollar Tree - now $1.25 😞
That stuff will clean the stink out of a skunk's butt, so it should do pretty good on cigarette smoke.  😉

Buy or rent an Ozone Machine. Use it in a room with machine, NO pets or people. After couple hours, air room out. Good as new.
