  • Just a curious observer...
I don't think the Illinois Colorado law allows exceptions, it goes strictly by the year the machine was made. But whether your local authorities enforces it or not is an open question. They make a distinction for machines like those crane machines that give prizes because they require a "skill" to operate, so that isn't gambling. A slot machine doesn't require skill, you just insert coin/token and pull handle or push a button.

Here's a website that keeps fairly current with slot ownership laws:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_state_slot_machine_ownership_regulations

Here's the lengthy Colorado gambling statues, you can use control-F to search for "slot machine" to read the pertinent portions:
http://www.gambling-law-us.com/State-Laws/Colorado/

...
EDIT - not sure how I thought this question was about Illinois instead of Colorado.
Here's the lengthy Illinois statue, you can do a control-F to search for "slot machine" to see the pertinent wording:

It's actually kind of a gray area defined by whether play that could be construed as gambling is possible. It's definitely to your benefit to have the machine set for tokens and remove the BV. Setting it to give more than one credit per token inserted helps. Best thing is to avoid doing anything to attract attention in the first place, like posting on facebook and stupid shit like that. The authorities don't generally go looking for slot owners, they respond to reports or complaints

I used to think cranes were a skill game too, until I read the manual for one. They can switch in a device to turn down the current for the gripper so that it's too weak to lift anything, so the operator can set what small percentage of games it's even possible to win.

I'm in CO and my game room is loaded with E series Bally machines. All are legal and within the older-than-1985 law here. Plus, they all run on tokens. Best to stay legal.

Topic: Is it legal to own a slot machine that accepts TOKENS ONLY in Colorado?

I am sure if the machine accepts tokens in Colorado and if you move it to another state that it will still accept tokens.....  :rotfl:

Seriously speaking - I see many of these adverts where people say takes tokens only --- however they still have bill validators.
The bill validators do accept legal currency - now your pay out would still be token only and the tokens have no value.... however if you put in $10 and get 40 credits then each token technically does have a 0.25c value.
If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

Has nothing to do with whether it uses tokens or coins. It's all about the year of manufacture.

Besides, most of these machines have an electronic coin comparitor. that can take any coin that you insert as as "sample" in the comparitor. So it's a ten second task to convert it.
