Universal with error 21 that won't go away

I just bought a Universal Double Jackpot. When I turn it on I get error 21 and can't get rid of it or the tilt light. I reviewed some previous postings and checked the things identified in them. The things I tried are:
1. Pressed reset switch
2. Reset ram
3. Checked coin optics - red light comes on when the beam is broken
4. Disconnected connectors on mpu and for door and checked to make sure all pins looked good
5. The coin optics are grey and checked dip switch #7 is off
6. Removed the mpu board and cleaned the tabs on the edge connector

After doing all of this nothing has changed.
Any help would be appreciated.

First I would clean the optics, damp Q-tip would do.
If error still persists would swap one of the optics with the one below the deflecter plate. (Should be a third optic below the deflecter. You can use it as a spare. Try swapping it with one of the two optics. If that doesn't work swap it with the other optic.

If none of the above work suspect bad component on mpu board.

It turns out one of the optics was bad. I swapped it with the one on the bottom and the machine is now running.

I now have 2 other problems.

1. The coin diverter solenoid won't move the diverter when the machine is turned on. I lubricated the mechanism and it now moves freely but the coil isn't powerful enough to move it. I can manually move it to the correct position after turning on the machine and it will stay in that position. I am only getting 10.6 volts at the coil. I am not sure if that is the problem or if the coil is bad.

2. The reel labels don't match with what the machine thinks it is. The machine number is supposed to be 8556 according to the label on the reel rack. When I run self test 1 and 2 they don't match up. Is it possible the main board is for a different game? Is there some way to display the program number from the main board?

Great to hear your error 21 is gone.

The diverter coil is "normally" powered OFF. The reason for the coil is if the hopper fills up with coins and is about to overflow the diverter coil is powered and opens to drop coins in a bucket located in the slot stand. This is for casino use, not needed for home users.


Press the green test button 9 times and record the numbers displayed in the win meter. Each set of numbers will begin with 9, the test number. The numbers displayed will be the system eprom number, game eprom number, and max coin limit. Something like this;
 98406. System eprom number
90014. System eprom version
98556 game eprom number
90003 game eprom version
92500 max coin limit
They will repeat until you close the door.

I am not at home til March and do not have my game file numbers with me, maybe somebody else can help you identify that game eprom.

The numbers I posted are random numbers similar to what you will see, NOT the numbers you should see.

99211
90001
99212
90003
91200

According to a list I found on NLG this for a game called: 3M , Double Thunder / Double JP Time / 100,000 Reasons / Double Gold ( 100,000 )

This would explain the problem I am having. The next question I have is there somewhere I can get the correct chipset for the game I have?

Believe there are different reel strip's for Double Jackpot.

Starting with the jackpot symbols on each reel write down each symbol moving the reel up. You will notice the jackpot symbols are on the end of each strip.
It would look like this;

Jpot  jpot   jpot
Bar.   Bar.   Bar
Cherry cherry cherry
Dlb-b dlb-b dlb- b

Etc, etc, 11 symbols each reel. This will help identify the game. Most games have same symbol at same spot on each reel, a few do not.

Looks like you need an 8765.001-4 game chip with 8601 master (system) chip.
I have the files at home but no way to write to eproms. Should have this game on file. Maybe!
Will be home most likely end of the month.

Maybe someone else can chime in and help.

I have an eprom programmer. I haven't used it for many years (the software wasn't even on my pc so I had to reinstall it) but I should be able to figure out how to use it again. So if I can get the files I should be able to make my own chips.

At home now, checked my files and I do not have that file.

The Double Jackpot came in several versions. There is 7bar with cherries, 7bar with 5bar, 7bar with 3bar, 7 with 3bar, 7 with cherries.
The 7bar has the 7 overtop the bar symbol, same with 5bar.

Since your machine has 7's and cherries I believe 8765.001 to 8765.004 is your chip needed. Along with machine chip 8601.

I have only the 7bar with cherries game chips. Do have the 8601.

Suggest putting out a want add for game chip 8765.0001 to 8765.0004, even then I cannot guarantee it is the right chip!

Sorry I cannot help more. Been out of slots now for several years.
