Title: Bally 5500 Initializing Problems
Post by: brazoot on November 26, 2017, 06:07:23 AM
My Bally 5500 takes 10-25 minutes to start from turning it on from a "cold" start.  The reels bump up and down and the Handle solenoid clicks and clatters as well. The button lights also go OFF and ON.  The speaker Hums in intervals also in time with the button lights and Reel movements. When the machine finally initializes, ...five minutes later,  the Bill Vendor initializes.  It's been doing this since I bought it. (several years ago.)        When it finally settles down, it works fine.
Thank You in Advance for your help.      Tom

Your power supply is probably going bad.
Somewhere in the S5500 section is a sticky on how to repair it yourself.
Also, if you don't know how is a attachment on how to clear the board properly.

You are right !   I opened the power supply up and sure enough several of the capacitors were leaking this brown shellac looking stuff all over the P/S board.  I replaced the board only, and reinstalled the P/S assembly. On start up, the machine instantly fired up.  The speaker hum even went away. The lights seemed brighter, and the machine seemed to play faster.
What a difference !  Thanks for your help .     Appreciate it.     Tom
