Title: WMS 3 Reel Starts up and reels just keep clicking
Post by: johnnybgood1 on August 03, 2021, 06:35:09 PM
I have a WMS BB2 with BB3 CPU.  When the machine powers up it goes through the startup process and then just stop before final boot and reels just keep clicking.  Now here is where it gets interesting.  While the machine is running if I remove the 22 Pin Power Supply connection then plug it back in hot the machine blanks out.  I power the machine down and back up and then the game loads and plays.  The game can play several hours before it goes back into reels clicking or sometime I have to do the hot unplug and plug a couple times to shock it into submission.

Anyone have any ideas?

You probably have a bad power supply, or going bad.

Sounds like it won't get to the proper voltages on power up, but when it is on for a bit it will work...

Recap the power supply, will probably fix it. Try another power supply if you have it to see if it works.

Thank you

I was thinking that or the distro board.  Could it be that or unlikely?

Could be I suppose.  I don't have or have worked on the BB machines, so couldn't really say. My experience is with caps and power supplies. I've found bad ps's to be the most likely culprit for strange or hard to determine errors or problems with devices. The other obvious thing is a bad ground or power connection. Wiggling wires will sometimes help show those problems. I think your error is more along the lines of, not working at power up, but, kind of works after. I'm not sure if you want to leave it on a while with the chattering reels, it might stop after some warm up time.  I would be worried about excessive current draw messing it up worse, maybe. Clean power supplies (low ac ripple) and cooling are pretty important for electronic devices to work properly. I like to start with what could be the most likely fail point, then look at other things in a descending order of logical failure rates of devices. If that makes sense.  Most likely to least likely. Sometimes it's a really strange failure but most are common failures.

My slot machine occasionally does this when it's sitting idle. I reseated the connector on the hard drive and things tend to go back to normal.

I have a Stampede with same issue. If I disconnect the speaker, it starts up fine. Give that a try
