Title: Posts Getting Cut Off.
Post by: DB26 on May 30, 2021, 06:00:23 PM
I am replying to messages on the forum and I have my message typed out but when I post it half of it gets Erased. Any idea what is causing that?

I noticed on some  PM I received.  Couple words and then not finished.

If I don't double space the sentences in a reply and do a return to start a new line of text my comment is seen as one long run along train of words.

For example this is a sentence that has been double spaced from the above sentence. At the end of that sentence I hit return to start typing this sentence, notice the return was ignored and both sentences were merged to create one long sentence.

There is definitely something strange. If I press an enter and double space, then delete the blank line sometimes my text becomes super tiny.

To fix it I go into the post, copy it to notepad which loses all the formatting I clean out the post and paste it back.
Sometimes even this has not worked - and all my fonts become tiny, and I have selected all, deleted all, manually backspaced everything out. Then I just delete the post and repost what I put into notepad.

In al fairness Joey does state that this is optimized for FireFox (which I don't have installed) and I am generally a Chrome user and occasionally Edge depending on what computer. Not sure if this is unique to these browsers and doesn't happen in Firefox.

Are you using a computer or a cell phone?

Computer, Chrome and Edge on my corporate asset, Chrome and Safari on my mac book.
My laptop has Edge and Chrome and practically nothing else as I use it when I walk into clients and have had my car broken into before.
Insurance will cover the laptop but not the information on it.

I meant that for the original poster "DB26," but good to know. I'm finding that most people using cell phones run into these issues. I think the phone fonts or styles mess somehow with the HTML in displaying the content on NLG which IS better when using Firefox on a real computer.
I don't see how anyone could have the patience to use a teeny phone when attempting to describe a machine problem that might require many sentences to do so. Of course, this is why I spend considerable time editing nearly unreadable posts that are literally FILLED with HTML dribble that came through.

What kind of phone and what browser? You need to tell us all the relevant information for us to be able to help you.

For what it's worth, I'm typing this reply on my Android phone using Chrome and everything is working normally.

I'm having some of these issues as well. I'm on a regular desktop using firefox.I will get a private message and the notification in my e-mail has the full message, but when
I go to my messages in NLG only a small part of the message is there.
Sometimes just, "Hi there" and the rest of the message is missing.

Do you have a different browser (or can you install an alternate browser) to try accessing the site and see if you still have an issue?

I've seen problems with missing carriage return/line feeds on PM's since March 2020. I've gotten used to hitting enter twice between lines lol...
I am using Brave browser (built on the Chrome engine) on Windows 10.

No new browser yet but It seems I have discovered something about my problem. It appears my text is deleted after I use an apostrophe. As in the punctuation used to condense do not and can not. Have not tested it with other punctuation but I noted this when editing my posts a million times. Always deleted after the apostrophe.

I posted a reply today, my first post in several months and have encountered the error in this string.

I just hit return twice and am posting this response to see if the complete message comes through.

For what it's worth, it sounds like this could be an issue with "fancy" /smart/curly quotes (the curly quotation marks and apostrophes, instead of the ones that are just straight up and down). I'm typing on my phone with apostrophes and quotes that aren't the fancy ones and it's working fine.

I'll do some research and see what I can find.

Edited to add: it does indeed seem to be an issue with those marks and UTF-8. Maybe Safari recently changed something in an update that is making this occur more frequently now for folks using that browser?

Joey, please check out these two links:

The ultimate solution is to convert the forum to UTF-8. The steps are here: https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=472921.msg3422230#msg3422230 (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=472921.msg3422230#msg3422230)

Other people have noticed the apostrophe problem with the SMF forum software. It's not just NLG. My thought is that it is caused by code used to convert UTF-16 encoded characters to UTF-8. It runs into some character it doesn't like and loses everything after that.  Change the font face and try to replicate the problem.

Seems to work for me, at least in the preview. It's working.

I rebuilt your post from the numerous attempts.

What device/operating system are you using? This site, as stated on the front page, is optimized for best use with Firefox. It also works fine with Safari and likely with Google Chrome or other similar browsers.

I post from my iPhone using safari.

I just read that thread from last year. Have you updated your phone recently? There have been numerous updates and many other members are using iPhones without this UTF-8 (or whatever it is) issue.
I'm going edit and merge this back to that thread so you can get help with your machine in its proper area and so this thread doesn't turn into a mess.

Kevin
I just read your post form last year too. I remember all this now. There was some reason Joey was hesitant to do this before. He did another update and the site crashed. But you know more about this than me! I can let Scotty know.
But why is this happening with only one or two members?
I was just in the NLG admin site maintenance, and saw that little button. "Run Task Now."

The key is just to do a full backup first so that if for some reason anything goes wrong we can easily revert to where we're at now. We should be doing periodic backups anyway (independent of anything the web host is doing) in case of any catastrophic data loss by the web host.

As to why it's only happening with some members, it has to do with their browser/device sending "fancy" (curly) quotation marks and apostrophes when they post as opposed to most browsers which send them as regular quotes/apostrophes. If someone composes their post in Microsoft Word, for example, then copies and pastes it into a post here, that could also trigger the issue as Word uses fancy/smart/curly quotation marks.

Yes. This is a problem with the forum software and I think a fix was issued. The problem is that it does already try to convert UTF-16 and UTF-32 to UTF-8. It converts them so that the posts take far less space in the database. The converter has problems. It needs to be updated.
