Title: Starting to look for my first machine
Post by: telero on March 30, 2022, 02:46:07 PM
Hi everyone,

I got the idea that I want a slot/video poker machine and found these forums. I feel like I've been reading for about a week straight here and finally have an idea of what I might want, but wanted to run it by here to make sure I'm not missing anything and that I would be able to ask for exactly what I want from a seller.

First, I am in Oregon, so would need a cabinet that has a manufacturers name and manufacture date attached from the 1997 time frame. I believe that puts me in the 3902 realm of machines. From there I know I want a bunch of video poker, and The Munsters slot game.

My biggest concerns with those wants is video poker game selection and swapping games. I know I'd like the video poker set that has Ultimate X and Super Times Pay, but I think that requires an 044 setup. So my first question is whether I can upgrade a 3902 cabinet from that time frame to 044.

If I can get the 044 setup, it sounds like game swapping with that is fairly straight forward by changing the MPU and the backplane eeprom as a matched set. After quite a bit of searching, it looks like The Munsters slot game isn't available on 044, but is on 3902, so I'd need a legacy adapter board. What I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is whether the 044 MPU and backplane eeprom swap works with an 044 that has the legacy adapter. If it did, that would probably be my ideal setup for now. I'm also curious if multiple legacy adapters with different games can be easily swapped to a single MPU, or if you should have one MPU and legacy board per game.

If the above swapping doesn't work, it seems like the next best thing would just be to stay at 3902 and do the board modifications in the guide @Tilt wrote. Then quick swapping between an older poker set (that doesn't have Ultimate X or Super Times Pay) and other slots would be particularly easy.

Anyways, I'm interested in anyone's feedback on what I'm looking for so I don't go making too many mistakes when looking for a machine and that I hopefully didn't overlook anything too obvious. Thanks!

Well first of all  :NLG_WELCOME: and thanks for being a contributing member too.  It helps keep the lights on here so to speak.

The 1997 time frame is going to limit you to an older 13" or 19" GK cabinet.  That size refers to the monitor.  The 17" cabinets came out a couple of years later, in 2000 or so.  The 13" & 19" cabinets came with 3502 and 3802 MPUs, but the 3902 MPUs are a plug and play upgrade for the earlier ones.  In fact if you find an older machine it may already have a 3902 board in it.  The older cabinets can't be upgraded to a 044 MPU because IGT didn't make an 044 motherboard for them.   So staying with your 25 year old limit the 044 is out for now.

You're right about the swapping the 044 MPU/EEPROM as a set though.  You could swap legacy adapter boards out to change games, but if you go that route you will have to set the machine up each time you do.

If you do the EEPROM mod to 3902 boards all you have to do is swap the MPU out with another one.

It may not be real easy to find one of the older machine cabinets.  Most that you will see will be 17" and if 19" it's probably a Panda cabinet.  Easiest way to tell an early 19" from the 19" Panda cabinet is by the rounded front button deck.  I'm not sure what year they started making the Panda cabinet, but it was later than the 17" cabinet and as far as I know they only came with LCD monitors

The slot laws are so outdated that they no longer make sense.  These machines typically have manufacturing life cycle of about 5 to 7 years.  So what is the difference if you get a the exact same machine, but one was made prior to say 2000 (for 20 year states) and one made on 2005?  Same exact machine, just manufactured 5 years apart?  Also when you swap out to an 044 backplane and mpu (released in 2004), does that now make your machine a 2004 machine and thus resetting the clock?  What about when you put software on it, if the software was made in 2007, does that make it a 2007 machine?  These laws were written when the slot were mechanical and no changes to software or gameplay were easy to do, but now, it's just a pc with software that can easily be changed.  I think you will find that most of us home users in states that have the "antique" slot requirement, get more modern ones.  Just have a look at how many people here are from California (same 25 year requirement).    I'm wondering if there are other Oregonians here to share their experience.

Welcome!

Good luck on finding your first machine!

If you can hold off on Super Times Pay, I recall reading that Ultimate X is available for 3902 boards, but I'm assuming that's gotta be the first version of the game if it indeed exists.

So at least you could play Munsters and a rudimentary Ultimate X.

Tilt, thanks for the details about the different cabinets to look out for. On the 044 MPU/EEPROM if each legacy adapter had it's own MPU would it work to swap easily as per this post: http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=35718.0 (http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=35718.0) ?

I absolutely agree that the laws are outdated. Good question about the updating a machine with an older manufacture date. At least for Oregon, it looks like a gray area to me based on the wording. I definitely didn't want to come in here and just start asking inappropriate questions though. I'd love an AVP machine. One thing I do want to do is try to find a reputable supporter on the board to buy from if I can.

Thanks for the info. I'll look around to see if I missed something on the Ultimate X availability. If I end up with a 3902 machine, maybe in a few years I can get an 044 and pass it on to my dad. One of the main reasons I want Munsters is it's one of his favorite games and I think they took it out of the local tribal casino a while back. Because of him it was probably one of the first slots I played too, and it was the first one I ever won $100 on (got a bunch of Hermans).

:cool_thumb_up:Nice story about your first big win!

I've been really unlucky in actual casino play most of my life. I think the biggest I've hit is $400, and that was 12 years ago!

I've mostly given up casino slots in favor of video poker and do most of my slot playing in my garage!   :cool_thumb_up:

Yes it would.

Yes it would.

Thanks for the confirmation, I was hoping that was the case if I do go with an 044.

Is the machine you mentioned with the curved button layout like the one pictured in the first message of this post http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=1634.0 (http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=1634.0)
